Need Low cost, efficient and secure Home server
#1
The title says it all.
I have an external 1TB HDD, what hardware do I need to make this into a wireless / wired home server?
What is important for me is that it is cheap, and secure.
I really just need something where I can access large data files from multiple computers in the same lan.
It would also be good to access these files over the internet, but I don't know how secure that would be.
Is it cheaper to build something from scratch or buy a wireless HDD from the local store?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks.

Have you ever done something like this before? What you could do is setup a onecloud server with an old laptop or computer. Another option is setting up SSH and FTP to allow access to files off network in a safe way.

I am quite experienced with building computers and of the sorts. I do not have an old laptop, I considered buying an old one off ebay, but it is more of a "plan-B".
The problem with building an own server is that it is not cheap, the case is already at least 20$, motherboard, processor, ram... it gets expensive.
oh well.

well it depends on what you are trying to do with it honestly if its just a data storage server then well all you really need is a like new computer (windows xp/7/8 server) I don't know if vista would work but I imagen it could.

but if you know how to use linux or unix (I forget what the names of the other OS are besides windows and mac)

you can install the linux/unix OS on a micro SSD or a small SSD and run the OS off of those

then basically all you need to do is make sure you have enough cables for all the drives, adapters if you need to add more drives, and the bandwith for the server computer to handle what you doing with it if you planning on using it as a data storage center.

if its just used as a internet spliter then basically all you need to do is what devin said.

the easyest thing to do is go to a computer repair place and look to see what they have already. If they don't have something in your price range then go the custom route.

I'm more software than hardware though in my knowledge.

If data access is the goal it doesn't matter how good the hardware is.

To keep the cost down, first consider what you could do with your existing hardware. What is the make/model of your existing router?

Check if it has a NAS port.

Check this out: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/share-an-exte...i-network/

Or just plug it into one of the existing multiple computers and share it?  [Or pop it out of the external casing and install it as an internal drive.]

kind of it depends on what you doing.

if you are looking into doing large video editing including 4k and 8k Video then you need the hardware to handle the data transfers if you are using it for a server

I know you may not be looking to do something like this but its a good incite to what you may want to pic up and some basic information for anyone unfomilar with what they are trying to do
