Home/business sever help guide
#1
Ok so this is hopefully going to solve a lot of problems for people who are thinking about building/buying a server for a home or a business. I'm going to post a few video's and see if I can get some information from another forum or have someone from over there just basically put together a list of things you will need if you are planning on making a data storage and network server for your family or business...

First off you will need the data storage component of the server. (granted you will probably have a extremely scaled down version but the idea is still the same.) This unit will house your archived data be it legit or not, its also your back up if your server crashes so you hopefully don't loose much if anything if the data sever fails.

ok once you finish that you will have some Idea of what you will be getting into as far as cost is concerned if you want a reliable mass storage(granted i'm planning on getting the largest box they sell as i'm a reviewer and I NEED to back up my shit) but you can also buy a smaller mass storage if you so choose. Just remember you will have to reconfigure the system if you want to do this as a business sever.

As far as a personal server all you really need as a mass archive storage is a old computer with a flash dive OS and connection that will be able to handle the data transfer speeds needed for what you are doing with it. Along with enough drives and power to handle what you are planning to do with this server.

Next you will need a mass storage server to handle the day to day operations. In other words the work horse of your server. This system will hold the data until its archived on the mass archive data center. Remember you will want to set up your servers to archive them on a regular bases. Just as you would run a virus scan every so often or even change the oil or breaks on your car.

I would recommend you have the sever archive EVERY NIGHT just so you minimize any possible chance of your server array failing and you loose all your data because you forgot to back it up. Now you can use normal HHD for the main server but SSD's are faster but not needed unless you are a business.

plus HDD are cheaper with the $$$/GB being very low vs a SSD.

Now again this is just a guide on what you will need to think about getting not what you have to get.

now with that out of the way you will need to have a place ready for the servers to be:
  • easy to accessed
  • well ventilated
  • sheltered from the elements (obviously but there are people who would do the idiot thing and put them out side)
  • out of the way
  • hard to find if this is a home server.
Once you find a location that ISN'T A BATHROOM seriously those guys had their server in a BATHROOM for a while. Then it is time to start running your wires.

Remember this isn't a YOU HAVE TO DO IT THIS WAY its a guide to help those who want to do this for home or business.
