Private Internet Access VPN

It contained a copy of a letter written to them by the RIAA (? or someone, I dont have the letter now- maybe it was the movies production company ).

I do happen to have that movie on my computer , the IP on the letter didnt match mine, but I subscribed to Private Internet Access https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ several months earlier and installed their software so I dont understand how that happened.

I have written them and tried to use their instant messenger live help but no response. I havent unsubscribed yet until I can try to determine the problem (they are very inexpensive)

Any ideas why PIA didnt work or who I should be getting?

Or any other ideas on anything above?

Can you provide details as to how you set it up and used it, otherwise I doubt anyone could accurately help with some kind of useful analysis.

No one is likely to get any fucking letter if you properly set up a VPN that does not keep any damn logs

If they find out that you have been, they're not going to want to deal with that shit. They are going to notify your ISP what you have illegally download, in this case, nealring's ISP knows specifically what movie he downloaded. They would not have not known that, if they weren't notified by PIA. As for why the IP address listed in the letter that does not match your owns, is because of PIA's IP-cycling system. "Maximum protection" my ass, no matter what you do, PIA is going to react to customers who torrent illegally. The only "maximum protection" that was needed, was when your dad banged your mum. PIA is a shitty VPN, don't use it unless you want to get caught.

You are an idiot. You have obviously not done any research or actually used the service, have you? You promote your view with no empirical evidence, links, articles or reviews and you shill for a different VPN that gets ratings below (on average) that of PIA from all sources that I have seen.

Make sure you have done the proper setup and configurations. Not only of your PIA client, but of your OS and security features also. One thing that is always recommended, is to disable or 'turn off' IPv6 on all adapters when using a VPN, as this can and will defeat the 'being anonymous' security precautions of using a VPN. Read more into this from PIA themselves, here:

yes it did and so did joker's above post. I didnt realize PIA turned me in (It wasnt a letter from PIA that my provider sent me, so it had to go from PIA to the complaining party that wrote my provider who then wrote me. ) I've learned alot from this one page.

thanks

I downloaded their software and installed it as directed . I set it up to go through Hong Kong and when I checked the ip  it always was from HK. When i went to google something it said hong kong . I have sent reset it and now it says google singapore. So I was as sure as someone could be who is lacking in networking knowledge that I had set it up right.

I am going to read those links. Did you see what i wrote below to jesse? would that still happen if I didnt turn off IPv6? I dont think I did . I am going to read those links and try to see if I did or not
THe link you send to PIA's page about IPv6 (if I understand it) says they fixed the IPv6 leak so their software should fix the leak problem. Right? It doesnt say how to turn it off otherwise

I got PIA because it was rated so highly and cheap but it does make sense to do business with a vpn that isnt beholden to US laws. You dont disagree with that logic do you?

Funny thing, though, about ExpressVPN, also....though they state they don't collect logs - they do collect metadata from each connection - whereas, PIA does not.

Where is expressvpn HQ'd
I downloaded the latest Ubuntu about 6 months ago and was in the process of trying to learn it when I just bought a new pc. I use a genealogy program alot I couldnt get to work on it. If I were a programmer though I would definitely use Linux whenever I wasnt doing genealogy, it was alot faster and cleaner

good idea about the library. I mostly like old movies anyway, but I liked being able to get rare ones (like Johnny got his gun) from torrent.

and I didnt realize handbrake was for PC too until you wrote me that. When I went through my MAC phase I used to use it. I will have to relearn it.

The main thing I need now is some software though. Especially some that requires annual subscription. Its bad enough the software is expensive, and they wont release an ad supported version for private individuals to choose , but I really dont like paying a repeating fee for software (or most things)

Look, Ive said this before on a couple different posts, some here, some on other forums - but the message is the same:

If you think the NSA is trying to break your VPN security because you downloaded 'Purple Haired, disabled, midget Samoans who love Albino Black Transgender Cock' - then sure, don't go with a VPN provider in the USA - but if that's so, then I'd guess you have more problems from them than just grabbing a copyrighted movie off TPB.
I highly - very highly - doubt the NSA is tracking copyright violations through ISPs. Now, the copyright holders, sure, they want to get you, but they have nowhere near the resources a Gov. agency has, nor the technology or personnel to break encryption or snoop on you, if you take the proper precautions. Nor do they have the power to issue FISA letters or secret warrants to your VPN/ISP provider to demand they turn over any info on you.
Otherwise, enjoy PIA and learn how to secure your computer along with your VPN configurations
