What is a good and trustworthy VPN for someone that is new to all of this? And is Norton a good antivirus software as well? I know the only way someone can get a good VPN and antivirus software you have to pay for a subscription, so when doing this, would it be safer to download and purchase it through the Microsoft store or online?

Norton, Avast, etc, "fine."
Pay, said who? Let me say from my unfortunate experience living in a real nightmare country: Good is not equal to pay. In fact, I cannot pay at all, no Visa/MasterCard cards work. I use a private VPN with a small capacity, from a group of cypherpunks and that's my "last leg." ProtonVPN is blocked entirely. What I can say surely is VPN from a Microsoft store sounds odd a little, usually VPNs have own sites and good ones use Open Source apps like OpenVPN.
Why do you need an antivirus? Viruses, right, an insecure full of holes system is the reason or the potential risks, isn't it? Antiviruses don't prevent all the risks, installing it doesn't mean full immunity, it means a lesser wreckage if something happens, not no wreckage. I am usually a proponent of virtualization with up-to-date Linux and sandboxing for browsing web or insecure activities.
Why VPN, exactly? If piracy and the country active on fines, I can understand, if censorship, too, otherwise I am not sure.
Trust is the matter of time: Pick something you would like or looks okay so far, stick with it, don't listen to random folks on the Internet who are full of biases. Be your own way, try own experience! Nobody is perfect, will be mistakes made, but that's the way to become better, learn.

The VPN you want currently is NordVPN. Stay away from Norton, I would go with either Avast or a slightly cheaper option Avira. Yes you have to pay these days if you want it all right. I would go directly to their websites and buy from them that way and use Paypal don't give out credit card numbers just to be safer...

@Slow Mo
Norton has finally been approved to acquire Avast since the anti-trust case:

In case you're still looking for a quality VPN and antivirus, I use Surf Shark One. VPN and Antivirus. IT comes with several additional features but the most important ones are that they do not keep logs of any kind so your internet data remains anonymous, you have so many server locations available as well IP address rotation, dedicated IP address and static IP address options. The antivirus is excellent as well.

For antivirus, the windows basic one is largely sufficient. About the VPN, check OVPN, Mullvad or AirVPN.

I totally agree with this answer, Mullvad VPN is among the most trustworthy in my opinion.

As a Linux nerd, I have to respectfully disagree and say that AVs, antivirus software, are not the most effective in my opinion.
