why do people subtitle?
#21
I always rip subtitles with the movies when available and include them in my torrents. I never hardcode them because I want the downloader to be able to have the option of turning them off if they so choose. There are several reasons why I use subs in the same language (English)

1. I don't hear real well sometimes. I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) which makes it hard to make out what characters are saying sometimes.
2. I live near train tracks. Nuff said!
3. As Scarlette mentioned, I am also a night owl. My mother and son are not. Keeping the subs or closed captions on saves all our sanity.
4. It's also been proven that kids who watch movies and tv with subs and captions turned on read better than kids who don't. This is because they can associate the word on the screen with the words they are hearing, just like reading to a child and having them follow along.
5. It's also fun to see where the cast has gone off-script. Sometimes the people who do the subtitles for the retail copies only have the script to use so you can see with the subs where they ad-libbed.

I agree with everything you're saying. I have a family member that's hard of hearing and it's hard for them to make out certain words because of the damage that this impairment has done.
