correct though I should mention there is a reason they are call hard coded Subtitles.... THEY ARE RENDERED WITH THE VIDEO.... I should know I am debating wither or not to hard or soft code the subs on one of my collabs right now the only difference is the soft coded one are a separate file while the hard coded ones are as I said rendered with the video and the only way to get rid of them would be not to render it with the video... other wise you would have to re-render it with a video editor that can blur out just a section of the video.
but in doing so you end up having to edit the whole thing to compensate for just having 1 big ass bur bar thought out the whole video or end up cutting off a section of the video it self so ya
I don't sub unless I know what is being said but I also don't upload my video's to the pirate bay to begin with cause you can just watch them on youtube anyway and so far the one I'm working on now will be the only one with subs.
The sort of people who like to complain like to believe that everyone in the world has (or could and damn well should have) the same spec equipment as they do, has (or could and damn well should have) the same level of technical knowledge they do and has (or could and damn well should have) the same language competencies* they do. That is simply not true. Not everyone who wants subtitles plays their movies on equipment capable of rendering softsubs, not everybody knows how to play them, or how to burn softsubs to hard.
So hardsubs are perfectly legitimate. And if an uploader mentions them, then nobody has any right to complain.
Even if they don't mention them (and tbh you can usually guess for yourself when they are to be expected), there is still very little cause for complaint--they are a minor distraction. And if you're watching anything other than BD50, you have already accepted a massive compromise in quality so the loss of a few more pixels at the periphery of the screen really doesn't make any significant difference whatsoever.
* Witness the recent upsurge in complaints about people uploading French language rips: as if more people uploading more variety is a bad thing; as if uploaders are going out of their way to upload content in formats they know people don't want. ffs, downloaders are their own worst enemies, they do a better job of hounding uploaders out of uploading than the MAFIAA does.
I pretty much taught myself English by watching English language films with English subtitles. It really helps with the concentration and it is especially useful for enlarging/refining your vocabulary as a non-native speaker, since your brain memorizes the correct pronunciations and spellings of words without you even trying.

As for Chinese subtitles, characters can be quite difficult to read if they are small. However, I can see why it can be annoying if it's big, or "takes up half the screen."
Imagine these symbols flashing and blinking in your face every time somebody talks. I think it's more or less the same when it comes to Asian subs, but Korean is by far the worst.
Here are some additional reasons people put subtitles in their own language for same language spoken shows and movies:
1) for the hearing impaired! not everyone has good ears, and the deaf have just as much right as anyone to enjoy shows and movies same as you. subtitles are essential for these folks.
2) folks that are learning to be literate in a foreign language. most people forget that more than 2/3rds of the world doesn't speak english. but if they want to get a top notch college/university education in their chosen field, oftentimes it requires them to learn not just to speak, but to read and write english in order to get that education. cuz like it or not, some fields of endeavor are only offered as the best of the best in english only speaking colleges/universities. The best way to learn a foreign language is to do it when you are young, under the age of 12. But most folks don't have that luxury and aren't able to learn additional languages until they are full grown adults. So the next best way to learn is by immersing yourself in that language. And if you want to be literate in that language, watching shows with subtitles in the same language as being spoken helps you learn how to read and write in that language, as well as pick up on things that text books, language courses and classes can't teach you. Like colloquialisms, turns of phrase, slang, etc.
3) night owls don't always have the luxury of being able to listen in dolby surround sound at 3am in the morning which feels more like just after lunchtime for them. if they live in an apartment or have nosey obnoxious neighbors in single family houses neighborhood, then watching and listening to shows and movies at regular orchestral volumes is not an option, especially if they don't want the cops knocking on their door for disturbing the peace and getting fined for breaking after hours sound ordinances. not everyone is comfortable with wearing headphones/headset/ear buds to watch prolonged hours of tv and movie viewing, especially on your day off. I have some expensive vintage Kosh headphones with big foam pads around the ear speakers. But after 2 hours of wearing them, I get massive migraines from them pinching my eyeglasses against my temples. Turning down the volume and reading the subtitles is a less painful way to keep my neighbors off my back while I'm awake from 2pm till 8am.
However, it would be preferable that the subtitles tracks be in seperate srt files, that you can enable or disable as you please in VLC player. my only guess why someone would hard code them into the vid files is to keep the size of the overall files down to a minimum. But i'm not as tech savvy as others about those sorts of things, so as I said, it's just a guess.
