Sharing pics of yourself online, and the consequences.
#1
Do you divulge everything about yourself on the internet, or are you more guarded and protect your privacy at any cost? What about sharing a photo of yourself, perhaps a nude one, and what about posting pics and videos of your kids on facebook or youtube?

Recently, a pirate I know uploaded videos to youtube of their children playing at home, and when I asked if they were worried about their privacy and personal security, they nonchalantly replied 'No, of course not, I know what I'm doing, and I'm not showing my face anyway.'

Besides the fact that the kids may grow up despising, perhaps even hating their parents for whoring out their children's lives on the internet for all to see (I know I would), there is the very real risk of the authorities identifying them. Also, if the embarrasing cringefest vid I saw doesn't cause major family conflict in the future, then I'll eat my hat. Way to fuck up your children's heads by publicly displaying all their faults and mishaps for their future peers (and employers) to see, judge, mock, whatever.

Disclosing key identifying pieces of information such as your real name, date of birth (or age), and location is beyond stupidity imho, particularly if you're pirating, so why are people so willing to share so much about themselves, and why do people post photos of themselves online?

On some torrenting forums you'll find 'post your face' type threads and it amazes me how many are willing to sacrifice their anonymity for the sake of a few laughs or rep points. I know people who've posted their pic online and then removed it, only for it to have been copied (before removal) and put on another site, because that's the internet for you. There's no way of telling what will happen to your pic once you've posted it online.

Then there's the issue of posting nude pics of yourself, or sending them to someone else, like a partner, who may well post them without your permission and knowledge, for financial gain, laughs, or revenge.

ShadyJay recently started a thread in The Void about a website that hosts nude pics of women and girls who may very well turn out to be your sister, daughter, girlfriend, wife, whoever. Are people who share nude pics of themselves astonishingly naive, stupid, or simply ignorant of the consequences?

There are several revenge porn websites out there, mostly hosting pics of women, but there are also sites that encourage women to post pics of their ex-boyfriend or whoever to get back at them. It's a disturbing trend but there seems to be no shortage of people willing to share, or whore themselves out, depending on your viewpoint.

There are cases of women having their lives ruined by the discovery of online nude pics that have been posted/uploaded by their ex-partners, and in some cases have led to prosecution of the poster. Legally speaking, it's covered by internet harassment and communication decency laws, and in some countries like mine, they already have specialist internet stalking/harassment units to deal with this, and the issue of nude pics turning up on the net.

Personally, I keep the key pieces of personally identifiable information to myself, I've never posted a pic of myself online, don't do facebook, and won't even allow members of my family to take my pics, lest they put them on sites like fb. What are you willing to share online, and what, if any, are your limits? I'd hope pirates were more guarded and protective of their identity, than say, people who don't, but for some people, they couldn't care less about the issue.

People are narcissist. They want to show the world how much height of stupidism they can achieve. And, most of them manage to surprise us every time.

Btw, the follwoing TED talk is worth watching for this issue.

I think if someone wants to hurt you they'll find a way, with or without the internet.

yes
but the Internet + immature behavior of someone that using ridiculously most of their useless braincells to "stand up" globally by doing something that so retarded that not given any contribution to so called "Freedom of Information's" and using "Social Networking" properly....
make it very very easy

PS: some peoples really think that posting pictures of themselves with queer pose(sometimes half naked) in facebook and/or tweet it can help to prevent Global Warming

The reason I've always been vehemently opposed to such threads on SB (and on the 'net in general, where unfortunately I've not possessed banning powers) is not just that they are dangerous to the people who "post pics of themselves" but that there is no way of knowing that the pics really are the of the person who posts them. That capacity for mischief is not only another, greater, danger but it also totally devalues the threads--you simply have no basis whatsoever for believing that any posts in such threads are genuine.

Anyway, fuck it, here's a pic of me. [Image: Handsome-guy.jpg]

I applaud your bravery man for taking the risk and doing that. I wouldve expected you to be better looking though....

Before the "crash" here I remember a thread where we posted pictures of ourselves. Pretty comical from what I remember.
