It's the laziest, hackiest form of comedy. You can absolutely reference and discuss any of those things, but you have to have something to say about them besides just mentioning them by name
"Remember when the Kool-Aid guy would break through the wall and say, "Oh yeaaaah!"?"
Yeah, I do. What of it?
My exact impression of Ready Player One. Which they riffed, so you think they'd know better.

Plus, Mike and Conor created the 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back podcast originally for Ready Player One.

Member-berries and reference riffs are all about how you do it.
If the riff is, "Hey, that looks like the kool aid man, ha ha!" that's not really a joke at all.
If, as the fat guy breaks through the wall, the riffer yells "OH YEAH" in a koolaid man impersonation WITHOUT EXPLAINING IT OR POINTING IT OUT OR SETTING IT UP, just slipping the line in there, then that's a perfectly acceptable joke.
I've notice that nu MST3K is very bad about 'setting up' all their reference jokes by saying something like "hey, that's like the pudding pop commercials" and THEN making a pudding pop joke. Like their afraid their new age hipster audience won't get it. And it's Lame.
It's okay if the audience doesn't get all the references, a good movie riff should be well rounded with some references, some situational and observational comedy, and even the occasional low brow dick/fart/pot joke. Something for everyone.
I've always thought that the QuipTrax guys are very funny and usually construct their riffs very well. It's too bad they aren't working for RiffTrax, or nu MST3K for that matter.
Oh also, I agree with the opinion of the general quality drop off in RiffTrax, although I think they've leveled off in recent years. I wasn't going to get this riff, but now I might have to to see for myself the audience reactions.

I have seen people complain on the RiffTrax disqus forums. Sometimes it's that the movie is so bad that it's not worth watching, riff or without. More recently, a few people have complained that RT is cutting 15 minutes out of their VODs. I haven't really seen people complain about Nick Nolte, though.

There’s still evil up there at the old Amityville house.
A group of priests gathers to quell the demon that has long plagued this lovely five-bed, four-bath Dutch Colonial full of old-world charm and lots of curb appeal. BUT - the Evil escapes! Which should have been made obvious by the movie’s title. And how does it escape? Like all evil does: by possessing a tacky floor lamp, getting sold at a garage sale and shipped to Los Angeles, where most evil household décor eventually finds a home.
Soon the demonic floor lamp begins its reign of terror in the home of an innocent family, killing pets and home repairmen, forcing children to use power tools in unsafe ways, and possessing the soul of the youngest sister Jessica, who immediately begins to act like a total jerk.
It’s up to the young priest Father Kibbler to save the family and confront the evil lamp, face-to-bulb, before more people die. Okay, more people DO die, but can Father Kibbler finally put an end to it? And are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? A completely unrelated workplace safety short, It's Your Accident, remains oddly focused on this question! Join Bill, Mike and Kevin for the perfect Halloween treat—a night with Rifftrax Live and Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes!
