I use .srt files on VLC player. I don't think a automatic subtitle downloader exists.

BSPlayer, video player which will (auto) search subtitles IF subtitle file is not found by it, so far never had any problems with it. As database, it uses OpenSubtitles.org GetSubtitle.com and bsplayer-subtitles.com

Yes thats what im doing at the moment as well. Manually downloading subs and loading them in when i view a video. A bit tedious and thought there must be a way to automate the process.

Sounds like what im looking for. However this BS player seems quite heavyily bloated. Any addons for something like MPC

It's not bloated nor heavy lol (using an Intel Atom 1.66Ghz) and it runs pretty well, indeed VLC and MPC are more lightweight.

You can try SPlayer. It's lighter than VLC and it has sub fetching just like BS player

I've never used it but mpc -hc does have the subtitle download feature.
File-->subtitle database-->download
options-->subtitles-->misc: URL of the online sub database (opensubtitles is the default)
