What's the best video downloader on TPB?
#1
IDM never seems to work for me.
So I'm using a browser addon called Video Download Helper.  Only sometimes it just doesn't work and that's even with the companion app installed

Is there a video downloader that will work ALL the time?

Short answer: No. Reason: Websites keep coming up with ways to enforce DRM / make it hard for pirates

Jdownloader grabs a lot of videos and audio streams and other shit (like retro games from archive.org), java based (runs on any OS), open source, friendly GUI -> https://jdownloader.org

youtube-dl grabs even more video/audio streams (not just youtube) than jdownloader and is also open source, actively maintained, python based, but no GUI... -> https://youtube-dl.org

If you keep both updated chances are either of the dev teams have found a way to leech your favorite video site

List of supported sites: https://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/su...sites.html
Previous thread where we went over how to use youtube-dl: https://forum.suprbay.org/Thread-Is-ther...om-youtube

Personally, if neither jodownloader nor youtube-dl can handle it I pass. I am not a fan of browser addons (besides the bare necessities like adblock and noscript)

Bonus trick if you have youtube-dl and mpv (sudo apt install mpv) installed:
Stream your favorite public iptv station or youtube or porn videos directly in the mpv player (no ads or website BS) by doing "mpv [url]" in your terminal - Windozers will never know this level of comfort

Oh, precious mpv, I have been using it with youtube-dl as a player engine for SMPlayer on my ancient laptop when I'm not home (Win7 x86), it doesn't bear youtube in 480p+, but youtube-dl works fine as far as 720p. As for IPTV, I'm using VLC and it can cope with m3u8 index & mpd direct links.

The big plus of youtube-dl as of downloader for me is it can save HLS chunks into a solid mp4 or whatever file.
