Hi there, My name is Jel from Australia. I have a couple of questions. I'm not sure if I am posting in the correct thread here and I apologise if that is the case, but here goes.

As you probably are aware, the Pirate Bay.org has been blocked in Australia and I have yet to change my DNS server, which I will get around to. My question is; how do I find the genuine Piratebay mirror sites. I have located several lists of proxy sites, but I have my doubts as to whether these links are genuine. I am currently using ThePirateBay.se.com which works fine as long as I stay on the search page and click the magnet link to download the file. If I don't do this, the site asks me for payment details, which makes me think TPB.se.com is not genuine. I will probably try to change the DNS server so I can access the real Pirate Bay.

My other question is about seeding. I am finding many torrent files that will not work due to low numbers of seeds and large numbers of leechers. I am not really familiar with what all this means, however I do know that when downloading a torrent, you are supposed to seed the torrent, what I am not sure about is how long I should do this?

Someone suggested I should seed that same amount of MBs that I've downloaded, for example; if I download a 500 MBs TV episode, then I should seed or upload 500 MBs once the downloaded has finished. Is this correct?

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from the members here.

Long live The Pirate Bay

Cheers, Jel

That depends on what you mean by "genuine"?

If you mean sites run by TPB, or endorsed by TPB, that's easy: there are none.

If you just mean sites which seem to work and aren't known to be outright scams, there is a thread here: http://suprbayoubiexnmp.onion/Thread-Pirate-Bay-Proxies [but there are no guarantees and our official position is: third party sites are inherently risky and we recommend not using them.]

The only "official" addresses of TPB appear in the footer of this page: currently https://thepiratebay.org and our onion address (which you can access via Tor Browser) http://uj3wazyk5u4hnvtk.onion

That is a known scam site, definitely stay away from there.

There are no rules about seeding (on TPB; there are on some other sites) and there is no definitive "should". There is simply your own circumstances and your own conscience. But as a "rule of thumb", uploading as much as you download is not a bad choice.

You upload while you're downloading so, sometimes, you might upload 600MB by the time you complete downloading your 500MB upload. Bearing in mind that there are no rules, in such cases I don't see a need to continue uploading.

You may also want to consider the wider picture. If you downloaded "Arrival" a 950MB version of which currently tops our download charts with 9000 people seeding, you could choose to not seed at all and it really wouldn't make any difference to anyone. But tomorrow you might download a 500MB episode of a 1960's TV show that only has 1 person seeding and you might choose to upload 500MB + 950MB = 1450MB then because that might mean the difference between the torrent surviving for another month or dying.

Stop. Use https://thepiratebay.org/ and nothing else.

It's not how long but how much (ratio). I use qBitTorrent but this can be found on every torrent client. You have a tab (normally hidden, you must activate it) called ratio and that is the download/upload ratio. I mean: 1 means that you have uploaded what you've downloaded (100%). 2 means that you have uploaded the torrent twice (200%).

As a good torrent user I am I always seed 3 times, 3.00 ratio. My own uploads I never stop uploading.

Well, It is correct and it it incorrect. We always should upload a little bit more then 100%. It is a bad torrent? (software doesn't work anymore, or other) Then upload 100% (1 ratio). IS it a good torrent? Upload at least 2 times (2 ratio). That way the torrent will never be out of seeds.

I choosed to answer you next to @Sid because he has a different opinion of me.
Im a torrent user for long time and I always respected torrent basic and gold rules.
Since I was an uploader on a big private torrent tracker, I always follow the gold rules.

Hope to see you again  Shy

This is a good rule of thumb to follow. I also didn't know about the ratio function on qB - glad to have that now, makes it a lot easier than trying to calculate the ratio.

Also don't forget that just because you uploaded the same amount of data that you downloaded, it doesn't mean that you actually uploaded the entirety of said file. So if no one else is really seeding said file, it could have just died, even though you seeded the same amount that you downloaded. Here is a good thread that helped explain that for me:
https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-how-much-to-speed
I know, it says how much to "speed", but it is about seeding. I had the same question. And @freeaf, Thanks, I was wondering about how long to seed your own uploads as well. Mine are typically e-books anyway, so they don't require much space.

From TPB: https://thepiratebay.org/help

Always try to upload at least as much as you download.
Thats the way to keep the bittorrent network alive.

OP hasn't returned since starting this thread 8 months ago...I think we can call it a day here.
