First, it is important to define what you refer to when you say "encrypted e-mail"

This could mean the text itself is encrypted, or the mail server's connection is encrypted.

True end-to-end encryption can only happen with something like PGP or S/MIME, where it is encrypted before leaving the sending device and decrypted on the recipient's device.

Anything else leaves the message open to intercept at multiple points in its journey.

Even Hushmail doesn't count, as the encrypting/decrypting takes place on the server.

riseup.net encrypts connections when possible. The message itself is still transmitted in plain text over the encrypted connection. If your connection to riseup.net is encrypted, and your recipient's mail server supports encrypted connections, and your recipient uses a secure connection to access their mail server, then it is fairly safe to say the message was not read by anyone else. But that is a lot of ifs and doesn't account for anyone who may have access to the server that could read the message while it is on disk.

It will be a while before web based mail clients support true end-to-end encryption of the message itself. Until that time, you either have to use a desktop client that supports PGP or S/MIME or use PGP software on the desktop and copy the encrypted text into a web client.

One advantage to a desktop solution is that you can use any mail provider you wish, and it doesn't matter as much if they encrypt their connections.

Golden words! Totally agree with you.

I am using https://bitmessage.ch they seem to be good, except recently their site is not accessible via clearnet (some SSL problem), but only via darknet (Tor) - http://bitmailendavkbec.onion
