My thoughts on piracy
#1
Digital piracy is a crime. It is illegal to distribute copies of a copyrighted work, whether on the internet or otherwise.

I'm not trying to debate whether the laws are correct or fair. They do exist though.

What the users of filesharing are doing is a crime. I am a criminal. I'm ok with that. Smile

So many people try to justify themselves by saying that the laws should be changed, or that it's only 1's and 0's, or it actually helps the artist or whatever. But the truth is, we are accessing things that we aren't supposed to have access to without paying for them.

I, and most of you reading this, are breaking the law (and probably most of us every day). I personally don't give a shit that I am, or that any of you are, but at least I'm realistic about it being illegal. But fuck them. I honestly don't care myself whether it's legal or not. I'll keep doing it until I am stopped somehow, either way.

So if you agree and think it's illegal, why do you keep doing it? Maybe because the risk of getting punished for it is so low? Because it's so easy? What?

Because I don't give a fuck.

It's fun

Cable is expensive.

I just pay for the fastest connection I can get where I live (15 mbps unfortunately) instead of paying for cable

Bullshit.

Human beings have been freely and readily creating and sharing ideas and culture for 200000 years.

Copyright law is an abstract concept that was invented just a few hundred years ago to artificially and unnaturally censor, monopolise and monetize ideas and culture.

If anything, we are "supposed to" NOT pay. It is the absurd concept of paying that requires justification.

what available to take/get in the internet in the form of Digitals is free for anyone to take it even if that come with a price tag
that's my opinion
there's nothing to do with me paying for the fast connections or not
if it's there and it's get my interest then I'll get it

I understand what both of you are saying (picklock barely) Smile, but that is not my point. The two of you, and many others don't believe that what you are doing is really even illegal, and I respect that. I'm asking about the people who think it is illegal. Because it is! That's just a fact. The laws say so.

I'm not arguing for the correctness or morality or legality of any laws, just why people still disobey them, if they feel they are breaking them.

Because I have a free will and I can.

no
it's not illegal here if the stuff is available to get even with price tag
it's illegal if it's not available to get even without price tag

some just feels good for breaking laws that they're not even involved in the making
remember that morals and regulations is another form of "agreements", and how peoples supposed to react with things that written and forced them to agree with?

The statement : "Digital piracy is a crime. It is illegal to distribute copies of a copyrighted work, whether on the internet or otherwise." is flawed. I reject the argument at it's very conception.

The concepts of 'copyright', 'illegal', 'crime' are defined by the corporate and state elite, driven by capitalist goals of exploitation, and as such should be ignored on a daily basis as and when your freedom dictates.
savvy?

As for why I would 'break the law' by distributing digital files... because we're right and they're wrong (aka: the law is an ass).
It's not just an option to break illegitimate laws, it is our duty.

Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitude.
It's my world, it's your world. We are free to be free if we choose, and I do choose.
Fuck the law.

Give it a name.

I've honestly been warned several times, had letters and in person consultations regarding my more explicit activities. I've since then taken measures to try and circumvent future problems, but for a long period of time after these warnings I still wasn't familiar with the idea of VPNs or.. Proxies or anything. So why?

I enjoy films, and books.. And art, and software. For a long period of time I went through a great depression, and when I discovered you all, and the community, these movies and books transported me to another place in time and space. I didn't have a way to purchase these things. I had no way of finding an outlet to purchase these.

You all helped me escape myself and give me much needed relief in darker times. And now, all I want to do is help others in any way I can in the same way that I was aided. I am indeed a criminal. I mean, the chief didn't give me the name St. J for nothing.

However if that's what I'm to be to enjoy and help cultivate a community of helpful and selfless citizens actively participating in sharing with everyone, then so be it.

Great thread Joe....

In my part of the world sharing copyrighted material is illegal. So is stealing a car. That Jaguar XF AWD would be so sweet to cruise around in but I'd certainly get caught stealing it. Being part of a swarm downloading an album 20 years old? Not so much...Plus, after all the free stuff I've enjoyed over the years, I wanted to give back. I just wipe my ass with the notices I get....

"Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world..."

-John Lennon's "Imagine"

Right now there are humanoids a billion light years away looking down on us and saying, "Wait, they still hurt each other over the color of their skin? They pray to different Gods and then start wars because of it? Ride around in private planes while children die of hunger? Give them a thousand years before we come visit and say Hi"

Absurd or not it's the world we live in for the moment.

I love ya brother but careful leaving that art gallery with the sculpture you like, or the florist with that orchid without paying for it....

/off topic

I was literally listening to PE's "It takes a million..." album yesterday. A must on 420...
