Donation incentive
#1
I don't know why the site is going so often offline but if it's because of too low resources, I would be happy to donate.
If that's the case, it would be nice to know how much is needed.

My suggestion is to add dynamic amount displayed on the main site that is required for each month of hosting / maintaining the site.

For example:

$0140.00 Remaining for this month, Already donated: $XXXX.XX

I think it would not violate privacy on user side nor on the server side.

Why let the MAFIAA see the stats?

I think it is better for security to not implement the incentive, people will donate because they want to.

They already see how much is donated, let's not be paranoid about it, it won't give them anything.

A compromise would be to let people know about needs without detail. Could this work? Dunno.

Btw... Massa is a pirate with a big booty. Smile)

I was thinking other ways but it's clearly my fault not to mention. Obviously I shoud've specified! Blush

Your suggestion can be circunvented by simple average; furthermore, at day 1 we would have "$9999 to go", then one could guess the needed total.
Also, being closely monitored, any variation on the active display (say, at 15' intervals) will give up information: When and how much donators are willing to pay.
Statistics and intelligence over network monitoring can lead to even darker conclusions. God bless the NSAmerica!
I suppose slicing the desired ammount between reasonably random intervals and ammounts can't help. Mathematics is a beach - in Normandy.

First step is to use shuffled, multi-step virtual currency transactions.

Then maybe TPB could have a partner indirect sales service on a 3rd party site. Probably it was already suggested and likely rejected.
Users would have the privilege to buy authentic memorabilia and gadgets, like an action figure of a famous pirate for like $100.
It is reasonable for a collector's item and has lotta room for extra money that is "not a donation". Legally arguable. Morally I don't care.

I would back the idea of each of the crew members having 3D avatars. Just don't expect me to pay $100 for a Sid or Moe... Tongue

The only other way to reduce chances for spying is international money-laundry, with foreseeable implications.

I see, like having a steak restaurant with prices ranging from 10k$ usd per steak - you don't have any obligation to collect clients data that pay with money so basically you have scheme for laundering money, because you can eat the steak yourself and say you sold it for 10k.

But still can't see anything wrong from showing how much site need to operate, I'm sure they already know it, at least approx numbers.

Winston will do what Winston will do, so...who knows.

Personally, I don't even like it that we accept donations. But at least the current links are unobtrusive. I would hate it if TPB went into full on beg mode.

As for giving people extra privileges if they gave us money? I would walk away if that ever happened. It's already painful having to deal with "VIP's" who consider that they can do no wrong because they are VIP's and that their status is sacrosanct. If they had actually paid for their status they would become even harder to deal with.

But merchandising, with TPB getting a cut of the money? I've always liked that idea. I don't know why we stopped doing that.

I agree that paid "Premium" accounts are a disease among pirate sites and wouldn't want to see it on TPB too.

I would love to buy coffee cup with TPB logo that would actually support the site, not like the third party stuff we see on the net.
But buying real stuff means revealing your location as you have to pick it up somehow, and that's a security risk.
