It's possible that going back to the days of Windows 95 or Windows 98 when people used DOS a lot. The way that DOS works when you type commands in and you put the file name you have to have a full line of characters otherwise you would have to put " " between the names to get it to work. The dots are easier to type otherwise you'd have to put _ between the characters which is more effort having to use the Shift key to do an underscore. I'm guessing it goes back many years where filenames had to be a continuous line without spaces and it seems that pirates used the naming that way because it suited the way DOS functions when copying from one folder to another and since those days things have stuck I would imagine...

I'd just use space anyways! Fuck the dots!

I also figured it was from the golden days and wasn't sure why it's still a thing. I've gotten so used to replacing the .'s for my media server but not every scene does it (anymore).

to be honest, nowadays its webbrowsers that prefer the dot, because if you need to type out a space, you'd have to type %20 every single time for compatibility reasons.

I believe it also has something to do with X systems (Unix, Mac) ?
