good things about piracy
#1
Hi,

My name is Midas, I'm a 16y/o boy from the Netherlands, sorry if my English is not that well.
And I'm using TBP.

I am writing a big report for my graduation about online piracy in the industry of music. I have interviewed a couple of big guys in the dutch fight against piracy from foundation BREIN and Buma//Stemra. Those are two dutch companies who do everything to impede online piracy.

Now that I have spoken to that side of the story, I would like to hear opinions about internet pirates. All I heard from piracy is that it is a bad thing, but i believe it is more than only a bad influence for our economy.

I am looking for people who can tell me what they believe is good about internet piracy. People can respond here if they want, but I'm also going to make an survey and I'd like to interview some people.

I hope some people will respond!

Midas.

Piracy allows you to preview of the real thing in terms of performance. For piracy, if you use a software before making a decision to buy it, you get to see how it runs. A while back, I downloaded Windows 8.1 for my system. The thing is that I can't get it to run to my satisfaction as I wasn't able to get my video drivers to work. The problem, in other words, is that it sucks. Sometimes, you can't refund software.

Indeed, if you look at today's trends, technologies like cell phones, music players, and on-demand services take pages out of the piracy play book. You can say that piracy has had positive influence to the market and will not go away. Refer to Fredrik Neij's latest post in the News/Announcements section of the forum.

Now is this to say that you need piracy to do anything? No. In fact, if you want to rely on software that is free, explore GNU/Linux, Libreoffice, and any open source programs. Don't be fooled by the free price tag: it's free, but it can also be high-quality. However, you asked the good that piracy does and I laid it out on the line for you. Here's my answer, so let's hand in your project and we'll get a good mark. Smile

well Midas if its for a progect report then well being a critic my self (as the fucking fees to go to premium spot to watch a new movie ends up being interrupted quite often 9/10 times) I feel inclined to reply.

Look I have been pirating shows and movies sense the late 90's you wanted some music you asked me. The moment DVD's and Flash sticks showed up at a cheap price you had a movie you wanted to see you asked me. I never did it for money. But I would always ask them to at least Buy the album or movie IF they Liked it and still do the same today.

I myself follow that Rule if and when I can afford it though the annual fee stuff you can forget it. Sure I pirate movies for a lot of people but I do it on good faith that they will at least buy the thing. I my self also keep the pirated copy so when I'm on the road all I have to do is slap my external in and find the movie I want to watch.

I always buy a movie I like same goes for games and other programs. But here is the thing if I pirate a game or a program I send a email to said maker of that product if I liked it and let them know so and if I don't like it I delete the software and make sure to shred the living hell out of it. then send a email to that company expressing my disappointment and also letting them know (from a throwaway email of course) what needs to be improved and what could be added to make the software more user friendly.

Now with music and other audio stuff that's more of a personal taste more than anything else. But that is if its a song or audio file if its a audio editor then the same thing happens with the other software.

Now games are something a bit different for me usually I buy a game the moment it goes on sale over on steam. (had a pirated skyrim elderscrolls for over 3 years the moment that thing was 14$ I got the whole thing no questions asked. though it was worth more I don't have that kind of cash to drop on a dime)

For me as a pirate its more of a non-limited extended Trail period seeing as some software companies seem to think that a 3 day trail is enough or even a 30 day trail is enough.

I tend to take my Time and thoroughly explore the program with the stuff I do (mostly video editing {fucking hate editing but that's the price of a independent reviewer} and a bit of video recording)

To say that I cause a problem with the economy is a lie I do but the stuff I like and express my disappointment with what I don't like and give advice to help improve those that need work.

I see my self as a way to get input from the consumer without getting a thoroughly pissed off rant. But all the companies see is a thief. I can tell you right now I don't have a dime usually to spend on anything I want and normally have to save up for months to get it. But that's just the cost of living now days.

I turn to illegal routes to test and consume my media as well if the legal side is messed up or can't find what i'm looking for is a decent quality (case in point old anime) usually most of that is around 240p-480p and on a dual 4k displays that is one crappy image to look at. But if I like the show I will find the makers of said show and send them some cash via mail.

I'm not a thief by any sense of the word but i'm not a blind consumer either.

rather than asking for opinions, why not go after facts instead?

browse the music, movies, programming, etc threads to find out how file sharing is driving innovation and expanding markets... and find out how copyrights aren't all at the same time.
