Your reasons for pirating?

So, we're all here because we pirate stuff. But why do you do it? I do because I'm a greedy, stingy asshole and want entertainment for free. Even if there was a legal alternative that would cost only one single cent I would still pirate. What are your reasons for pirating things?

I can relate.

There are many reasons why I pirate, and I will list them right now.
- cannot pay
- cannot pay, and thus, don't like the price tag on the retail versions
- Digital Restrictions, or stupid decisions made by software companies that make me tear my fucking eyeballs out
- evaluation before buying
- backup after buying
- sharing
- school work
- learn how to use software
- collection (this goes back to my Saturday morning cartoon days when I was still using VHS)
- keeping up with the times

I know that this list will not do justice if I took out my brain and dumped all my facts onto the table, but that's all I can think of. If I did find a game or a season of a TV show that I like and for a good price, I would buy it. However, since the industry are idiots and since I like to keep my TV episodes in my blank DVD cake box (don't recycle them; they're useful!), I would probably buy it for a friend and keep the receipt in my filing cabinet. I often raid second-hand stores to buy shit. Other than that, if I do like a certain DVD with criminal pricing, it depends if I can buy one anymore elsewhere.

For example, since the Benoit tragedy, WWE has distanced themselves from the now-deceased pro wrestler, pulling his merchandise from their shop. It was then that I saw the Wrestlemania DVD in a store of a shopping mall. I figure that it will become a rarity and that it will be my last chance. It was $50. I got it and now I'm laughing.

I too like stuff that are free. There's nothing wrong with that. People throw cliches around saying "there's no free lunch," I say, "fuck you!" However, while pirating Windows has a sort of appeal, I would prefer using free and open source software (free as in beer and speech) whenever I can. It's now my sixth year using GNU/Linux and I've been learning a lot about the operating system. Suffice it to say, I've grown to like it. It kindles my belief that if there is something that can and will kill piracy, it's open source software, from the Stallmans to the Torvalds.

I keep hearing about Bill Gates this, and Bill Gates that, and the media laud him as the next Jesus Christ. What people don't know is that the people who are not as well off as Gates contribute more and get no credit for it. I have nothing against a rich man trying to buy a reputation, we all need to feel important. What I don't like is that we also need to credit everyone.

Anyways, that's what I have to say, and I hope this satisfies your question.

I pirate because I can't afford all these expensive software, like Adobe Creative Suite, or even Waves bundle for 6000$ !
I do it on educational purposes.
Sometimes I download TV series or movies, but generally I'm aimed at software as it is the most unaffordable stuff for me.

Same here. Mostly these days i pirate for educational reasons with the odd movie here and there. TPB has helped me with educational material i could not afford which would therefore have excluded me from further education had i not been able to pirate it.
Now, through trial, error and many meltdowns i can usually find workarounds for software which may not be readily available on TPB or other sites.

If i was in a position were i could afford some of the software i use would i buy it? Probably. But i'd make it my mission to make that software available to others not as fortunate as me.
The fact that knowledge has a price tag really sickens me and i'll share everything and anything i get, regardless of the possible penalties to myself until someone or thing stops me. Smile

I forgot to mention: another reason I pirate is because I absolutely hate copyright and anything associated with it, so I pirate as a kind of way to spite that.

I'm a disabled single parent who for obvious reasons can't afford the ridiculous costs of software, and entertainment.
It's my duty to care for my child and if that means pirating software so she can do her homework/projects and not miss out on all the things he peers enjoy; so be it. The multi-millionaire copyright holders can kiss my ass.

For me it really depends on what im pirating...

I pirate books, movies, games and software...

Books cause is easier and faster to read in my laptop or my cellphone thant to buy them (altought is the book is really good i just have to have it on paper)

Movies cause i like to watch something and hollywood is producing crap, so i wont invest in the crap fest that they are doing (only one or two movies a year is worth the money)

Games cause every freaking damn game nowadays comes in ultra beta, charlie or delta status, and is really annoying to always search for updates of the MAJOR bugs they come with it, so i wont pay for an unfinished game (thats why i have an obsesion with ps1, ps2 and older games)

and software to just use it if i need to get something done...

But overall, pirating is a way of life, and i cant think of another way to get stuff nowadays.

@-nelly- those words really touched me..

And As for why I pirate:

1. the shit that sells in the stores here are pirated material mostly from TPB.. (movies shows...software etc) and they are no official retailer where I am..

2. I wont pay for a digital copy of anything.. I believe u should be able to touch what u pay for

3. the copyright system is seriously a fucked up system

dark, I agree with you on the nelly quote.

Just a question, how do/would you know that the stores in your area are selling TPB materials?
