Antiviruses? Just use a free one, like Comodo.

I like to also use a firewall to complement an antivirus. In this case, I use Avast as an antivirus and Tinywall as a firewall.

Avast: http://www.avast.org
TinyWall: http://tinywall.pados.hu

Hope this helps.

The best anti virus is the one between your ears. Don't do stupid shit like opening email attachments from people you don't know (or even unexpected email attachments from people you do know), or downloading from dodgy websites. If you are going to do so, think carefully before you click on anything--if it seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is not true.

All anti virus programs should be considered as the just SECOND line of defense. And none of them, paid or otherwise, is perfect. i.e. if you don't care in the first place, none of them will protect you fully.

That said, Avira and BitDefender are both decent and free.

It depends what you mean by "secure"? If you mean what can you use them to download kiddie porn and hack into government websites? No, none of them are that secure. If you just mean what can you use to shield you from copyright infringement notices? Any of them will do that.

No, it's not true. Windows doesn't block anything. It appears the site itself has closed.

There are a lot of free (and legal!)antiviruses. If you want an Internet security combo (i.e. firewall and antivirus), I would suggest Comodo.

However, most official sites only offer web installers, where the program downloads the files to install, and not enough of full installers, where a large file just installs them offline. The trick is to find those.

Could you please elaborate on why full installers are better than web installers?

Although web installers are easier to find as they are mostly offered on official web sites, full installers are a better choice due to that you don't have to download the files every time you wipe. Offline installation is faster despite the amount of space needed. Well, that reasoning is valid for me anyway.

I often do compilations for the setup programs for all the software I use for backup. To that end, I would need to burn full installers. If I just use web installers, there wouldn't be a point to burn apps to DVDs for backup. The point of burning applications to DVDs stems from the fact that if your Internet connection is knocked offline, or if you have to wipe clean your hard drive. People who keep making web installers miss the point because (1) if the Internet is knocked offline, you can't do shit, and (2) if you are wiping your hard drive, and have offline (i.e. full) installers, it's actually faster and more convenient.

Of course, I'm speaking from my own opinions, but if I can think of why full installers are better, so can two or two thousand other people in this world.

My two Canadian Dollars.
