I just downloaded and installed Windows 8.1 on my computer.
Now a few workarounds later, it works, but I found that the interface is restrictive and not effective.
Yet still, I am at a crossroads. Do I stay with 8.1, despite its flaws, or do I go with 7, an OS that is built for perfection (and maybe buy it for a change).
Feel free to volunteer any advice (or smart remarks ).
Thank you.

I've heard that Windows 8 does very well with systems with limited memory. Since I've only used my install of Windows 8.1 on my HTPC I can't really say anything else on that. However it was easy to install and next to no added input on my side like mobo drivers are anything. I think most reviews have said it's a small performance gain on Windows 8 vs 7. I have my main rig that I've been needing to fully reinstall a OS on it but I just hate all the long work of reinstalling games and shit. Currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I am gonna switch to Windows 8.1 but it's the part of getting it started is my problem.
I think Windows 8 boots up a little faster then 7 but it's not like it's some huge difference.

Since its you Id say stick with 8.1 then as soon as the next version comes out go with that otherwise you'll still be appreciating Windows 8.1 in 2024 as you do with Windows 2000 now.

8 /8.1 are both BETA no matter what you hear. They were initially developed as a metro exclusive O/S. M$ then decided to "shoe-horn" it into anywhere it would fit (Or not fit).
Go with seven until 9 is released (Supposedly late next year). Keep an eye on leaks to Ru-Board as they hit there before they hit anywhere. Including MDL.
Until then, imo, stick with 7 or XP

With the exception of a few changes like where the hell do I get updates I think you should just try it out for yourself and make your own judgement. BTW the Windows Updates are under PC Settings. Had to look that up on the web to find out where it was. I would NOT go to XP since there's no longer any support at all and no more security patches.
My use however as I stated is only as a HTPC using Plex and XBMC is very limited to that but setting it up wasn't so hard.

Trying to make fun of me?
Well, for your information, I'm off Windows 2000, and I have been a few months ago. I have three computers in my place, and I originally put obsolete OSs to test out and study the operating system. Now, my mother has XP, my third computer has XP, and this one has Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17, almost top of the line for each respective organisations for each OS.
OK, I just tried Windows 8.1 and I hate it. The video is slow, games are slow, the interface was cluttered up with no rhyme or reason. I think I will follow nelly: stick with what you have until something better comes along. So, I'll stick with 7 as it will make a great gift idea; I'm actually considering buying it to share my convenience.
Thank you to all who posted and have a good day.

Not at all, I just observed over the years that you embrace archaic software like its going to be the next big thing rather than last decades big thing. I'm glad your off Windows 2000 now even though the rest of us were of it in 2001 as using ancient software thats not even supported is really very dumb.
8.1 is a funny thing but remember its for touch screens out the box and you do need to do a few manual tweaks to make it behave the way your accustomed to with a keyboard and mouse.
