Windows 10: Unable to change File Type
#1
Hello,

I've never had this kind of problem before.

Started downloading "Far Cry 5 (CPY)", 9 parts, each one being 5 GB big.
Part 1 and 2 are finished, but the file type of part one looks like an internet shortcut:

Now it gets even more weird. I am able to change the file type of part 2, but not of part 1. The file type ".rar" of part 1 is not a file type, but part of the file's name (meaning the file type doesn't even show up), although the box: "File name extension" under "View" is ticked (see above).

I mean of course I can re-download part 1, but what the monkey is going on?

Hi, I haven't used the torrent yet, but the direct download here.
Google Drive links are overloaded, so I'm using MegaUp (DL speed currently between 250 and 300 kB/s).

Okay found a solution .. by associating the .url extension through the default apps page of Window's settings:

Start Menu > Settings > Type: "default" and choose the first hit: "default app settings" > click on: "choose default apps by file type" and scroll all the way down to ".url file", click on the icon and choose an app (I chose Google Chrome) ... resulting in this:

Now I'm able to change the file name from "Far.Cry.5.part01.rar.url" .. to .. "Far.Cry.5.part01.rar":

... finally ...

By the way, I'm downloading part 3 now. The DL speed using MegaUp currently is between 1250 to 1350 kB/s.

Well done, but instead of any browser, I would pick an innocuous app (like solitaire) or an anti-malware.
Then, afterward return the URL extension to the default browser association.

If it was a rogue link, chrome would go there and what could happen? Better not...

Although you can't be careful enough, the source (IGG) is trustworthy. But I just remember something else, an eBook that I downloaded as a torrent a while ago. The download was a folder and after double click there was a file, that looked like another folder (without any extension) and the following double click set off something nasty, which I was only able to track down months later, with the help of Kaspersky's tdsskiller.

Yes, I remember too... Looks like you're an adventurous downloader! Wink
Glad to hear you terminated the pest in your system.
