What Firewall ok for torrenting ?
#1
i use windows 10 and bittorrent client for getting torrents
sometimes Malwarebytes premium ( antivirus) keeps popping up little windows to say
its blocked 46....(ip address censored by me )  ,  port 1900 inbound
website blocked due to trojan it also says on the pop up windows, i googled the ip address and it came back as being from my VPN provider Ipredator

now this gets annoying if using your pc say to watch a film and every few seconds a pop up window appears with the same info, i dont see a way to tell Malwarebytes to stop telling me the same things been blocked so

i contacted my vpns support who said that might have been one of our users doing a portscan or something ,  running a firewall might be a good idea, port 1900 is part of UPNP, and is not supposed to be open to the Internet anyway.

so many years ago i used to use Zonealarm firewall but had to stop using it when i realised it simply cant keep up with torrent traffic ..i guess it slowed my pc down or something i cant recall exactly but i know i realised i had to get rid of it so i did

so what firewall is good enough to keep up with bittorrent data pouring into a PC all day long ? i guess i sometimes i  download 100GB a day of data   ( 4k videos etc )

thanks for any advice please only advise if you use the software firewall yourself and can vouch for the fact it can handle lots of data

The mistake that you're doing is you're using Malwarebytes Premium, you shouldn't use that you should just use the free version and turn all the premium trial features off.  Also add lots of exclusions, different files and folders that are relevant to torrenting and streaming in Windows.  You should never buy Malwarebytes because they try and block all sorts of Pirate style things that people do on a PC.  When they offer you the trial period you should always deactivate those features and just use it as a scanning program only if you think you have a threat to your system.

thanks Rodney er well its pirate copy of Malwarebytes ! i find it very useful as it blocks lots of pop up windows pirate sites try to open, the problem i had last 2 days has now stopped ..the endless pop up windows to do with that port activity , normally i dont have to put up with problems like that . Obviously sometimes when running cracks/keygens i switch off Malwarebytes but other than that no problems
what Pirate stuff do you think Malwarebytes causes us ? thanks a lot for any help

You don't really need to use Malwarebytes to stop pop up stuff caused by Pirate sites all you need to do that is either an Adblocker like Adblock Plus or a script blocker that you can download and add onto your browser.  There's no need for Malwarebytes, just simply a good anti virus program something like Avira or something else.  When you start accessing content Malwarebytes blocks all kinds of things and it's super annoying.  When it offers you that Trial thing when using the free version best thing to do is just switch off the components they are annoying and the problems go away.  I do live streaming sometimes and that gets messed up from Malwarebytes or would rather if I was having all the Premium features running in the background.  It would block all kinds of connections like torrent connections and using torrent clients to download from torrents it would block all that too and leave you with no torrent connection working.  Just get rid of it mate and do without it and get something else it's annoying and it'll happen again and again.  Depends if you want to keep being annoyed by them all the time.

Thx Rodney , i use noscript add on for chrome , and adblockplus, the stuff malwarebytes blocks is lots of the annoying browser windows that pop up pn some torrent sites and other sites for getting mp3's etc

malwarebytes does not/ has not stopped me getting any torrents from many different sites i use so im not sure what trouble youve had with it . It may have been from something else maybe not.

since restarting my pc and getting a new ip address off my VPN ive not had that pop up from malwarebytes about them blocking something on port 1900 inbound so far that was just 1 annoying day.

It causes problems when doing live streaming, not sure if you know what I'm talking about as it's not always what everybody does.  I did mention about this some time ago on here but peeps around the forum didn't even understand what I was talking about so it must be only a select few.  It blocks all the connections because Malwarebytes is supposed to crack down on things, that's what it's been designed to do and serve a purpose and this is why I don't need it myself just simply turn off the Premium features as it's not necessary.  I use it in free mode with those features turned off and it's a good scanner.  But scanner is all as far as I'm concerned.  The annoying Trial thing I had to deal with some months ago they got a regular slot there used to bump me up time and time again with endless new versions of Trial for 14 days used to do my head in.  Since then always removed those annoying features and got rid of the problem, the problem was solved that way.

The thing to understand is that the korporatiions have basically declared war on file sharing, and will try to tag as a trojan anything remotely resembling things like keygens, patches, etc.

Here, I have completely disabled the Win 'Security Center' and all of its main components.
I use PC Tools Firewall Plus (with most of the 'plus' turned off). All downloads go into a single directory (from plenty of symlinks) which I regularly scan with Emsisoft 'emergency scanner'. Its command line and driven with a script. It will also flag keygens and cracks, but here you need to be able to tell the difference between a 'trojan.generic' and a 'trojan.ENKRYPTOR' type result.

When in doubt send up to VIRUSTOTAL and use judgement with their results.

And realize that almost all NEW boogers will *not* be detected. Before release they are tested on sites like 'Virustotal'. If dtected they will simply change encryptor wrappers for their boogers until it passes.

The ONLY way to test new boogers is to carefully observe each one in a sandbox, and decide accordingly.

Also: learn to shutdown ALL unnecessary services (google Blackviper), so that if a booger does sneak through, it cannot do very much. Boogers are composed of three parts: payload, encryptor, and Windows Services.

Sidenote: PC Tools initially was not playing well with my VPN, and I could not figure out how to fix it, other than turning off the FW while downloading. Recently it seems to have 'fixed' itself. Possibly due to changes in the VPN servers? Dunno, but all is working fine now.

Computers didn't really seem to be as hard as this going back several years.  Things used to be much easier back in 'the day'.  Now we have to deal with everything, it's knowing which program is the correct program to use.  Even like when you are using a modern computer, compared to back in the old days things are so much harder now to understand so no wonder so many problems.  These problems have come along the way for the last few years.  I think if you need to use a firewall then maybe really it's not your answer, I think more along the lines a VPN is the answer now.  If you are encrypted by using a VPN connection then you're probably a lot safer than trying to do programs like Malwarebytes.  Malwarebytes just wants to crack down on torrent style program access and will do exactly that.  It blocks things because that's how they set it up to annoy all the Pirates and force them to dump their torrent clients.  There are other programs instead which will not quite work in that way.  I was annoyed by them so many times with their 'Trial' effort.  When a company like that starts annoying you in that way it's obvious they are wanting to sell to people but for people who like to torrent then it's not the answer.  Just sensible use of ad blocking software or script blocking browser add-ons is the answer.  Having a good anti virus also helps with all the ransomware.  Things were just so much easier years ago and you could do all this internet stuff much more simple and basic to understand.

Even when you look at say Motherboard bios it's all got so complicated.  When you look at old machines it was all easy really, so much simple things you had to do but now you need a degree in IT near enough to even understand how to go about setting up a PC.  Just concentrate on what you've already learned and use your VPN when you Pirate stuff and when you're not then just do whatever you have to do.  We all have our way these days, the way we've learned to understand things.  Back in the old days programs like Zonealarm is what people used more.  It's okay but you'll find that these days it's not the right choice in some cases.

Zonealarm. Had to reinstall Windows once in the old days because of that crap.

Agree about VPN.

However a Firewall is useful to keep things from getting *out*. And do annoying things like auto-update.

Every attempt is being made these days to drive people off their desktops into the cloud. Or turn their PCs into remote controlled 'thin clients' aka *terminals*.

M$ and Adobe are the worst, but Linux is playing catchup with some of its screwy recent practices. I dont know about Mac as I've boycotted Apple since 1982.

I hate the typical AV programs. Tried one a while back and it wiped a half dozen programs before I had a chance to kill it. What I like about then Emsisoft scanner is that its command line, I choose the switches, and it prints out a list of suspicious files. Thats all I want.

Worst of all is the Active Directories crap. Adobe dumps junk into directories I cannot find, and with the same names as the Windoze varieties ('Pictures', et al). I try to find all that garbage and symlink it to one place. Without my trusty file managers I simply cannot navigate a Win desktop anymore. Without difficulty, at least.

And networking these days is a bloody nightmare. I need to boot up an XP machine just to talk between my Win7 desktops! (And some drives absolutely refuse to share, no matter what....)
