I have been running vanilla versions (with some patches) of: fallout 1 & 2, baldurs gate 1 & 2, planescape: torment - most of them are pre 2000, made for win95/98 w. DX8-9. Baldurs gate 2 is from about the same time as WC3 (2002-3 ish). XP did not exist back then.

I'll give it a try and report back...

Not a bad idea at all

What about the ones made for XP and forward?

EDIT: Actually, XP did exist back then; it was released in 2001. I remembered it vividly; everyone was fucking bitching about the activation DRM that they wanted to go to GNU/Linux or just stay with Windows 98/2000. It was an exciting to own a computer.

Anyhow, the point I'm trying to make was that it did exist.

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas run just fine as does various TES installments like skyrim et al (I use openMW to play morrowind, no wine nor vm needed)

Admittedly, some of the games take some tinkering to get working...

EDIT:

Got this: https://rargb.to/torrent/warcraft-iii-re...70737.html (TPB is down atm)

Ran the installer (.bat file) in my win7 VM (win7 ultimate sp1). Ran the game. No error messages, no pls insert cd, no choppy graphics, smooth as buttered corn...

Downloading as I speak, thanks!

Curious: how did you find stuff like that? Stab in the dark?

I went for the one who looked like the most old school rip while still having seeds. This one said "run INSTALL.BAT" - doesn't get more old school than that...

More problems. I can't even install the web installer.

As I said, the system is not recognising the Cryptography whatever (thinks it's off) and cabinet file (referring to the web installer) is "untrustworthy."

I'm no better than I was last night.

You want my specs, here it is:

The fabulous INSTALL.BAT in the torrent seems to install the DX files the game needs so try not to worry yourself about that.

A few questions I want to pose:

1. Do you use the Guest Additions ISO to install drivers?
2. Can VirtualBox detect real drivers (like not the ones installed by the Guest Additions ISO)? As you can see in the specs I gave you, I have a Radeon HD 4200 on the computer. I would for VirtualBox to dismiss that.

EDIT: Oops, I left out that I am planning to install a latest driver of OpenGL.

Well, the results coming out of your help is that Warcraft gets stuck at the splash screen.

I'll keep testing though.

I use guest additions without giving a fuck what goes on on the driver level. It just werks™
As for OpenGL I am on OpenGL v. 4.6 / Mesa 21.0.3

Well, I believe I hit a stumbling block; I'm all out of ideas. What about you?

I guess I'll have to settle with the slowing down of Warcraft III and live with it.

Maybe a few months down the line, I might be able to find something that can work.

Thanks to all who offered... in other words, thanks to ill88eagle.

Not giving up, just taking a break.

Anyone who wants to help are welcome, I'm presently declare this problem to be in abeyance.

EDIT: I do have one question, do I have the ability to update OpenGL drivers onto virtual machines?
