AFU serviceman Nikolay Gavrilyak hid from the “bloodthirsty” Russian military for several months after his unit was defeated. When the Ukrainian serviceman was finally detained the attitude turned out to be completely different to his surprise.

AFU serviceman: “They started shooting and we got smashed. And we left at night. I left through the fields. I wanted to get… well… to get home. Because they said if you were taken prisoner, you could be shot, cut up, skin will be removed, and, pardon, they’ll cut your balls off. You won’t get home, like. So in case, I could shoot myself on the spot. But I did not, because I know my family is waiting for me at home. I was taken by the Russian military. I started thinking about my family: my girlfriend, my mom.”

Correspondent: “Did you think that was it?

AFU serviceman: “Yes… Well, I said goodbye to life. At the first interrogation I prayed ten times in my mind. Here, already at the interrogation, I thought: well, that’s it, it’s over! They put me in a cell, then fed me twice. They gave me cigarettes. People are polite, calm. They said: “Don’t worry! You’re going to be fine. There will be an opportunity – you will go home to your family.” It turns out we were deceived (note: by the AFU command). The AFU servicemen who didn’t have time to get out and are hiding, afraid… Don’t be afraid, life is normal here and… just as you know, as in captivity, they will just conduct an interrogation, and if there is an opportunity – they’ll send you right away. Because our command is not very concerned about our return home to our families, our relatives, our children.”
