Two ISPs, one PC.
#1
Basically need help setting up my PC to connect to two ISPs _selectively_.

I have an ADSL connection for now.
I intend going for a new connection which is faster, retaining the ADSL connection too.

The ADSL connection is slow and has unlimited download.
The new faster connection has a cap on total bytes I can download, but it is faster.

Aim:
I'd like to use the ADSL ISP connection for browsing and the faster connection for torrenting.

I have a Win 7 PC, with one Ethernet card. No wireless connections.
I think I will have to buy another Ethernet card.
Can't share two ISPs on same physical interface right ?

Not sure how to proceed beyond that.
I've just begin looking at VMware etc.

What are my options ?
What would be easiest in terms of installation/configuration.
Any other hardware I need to buy ?

Thank you. :-)

You will need 2 computers, 1 computer with two network interfaces, or a router that can manage two networks.

If all you have is one computer, adding a second network interface will do the job.

Using Vuze is probably the simplest solution, as it can be told to bind to the DSL interface. It is a bit of a resource hog, so if you'd rather use a different client, you can configure Windows Firewall to restrict your preferred client to using just the DSL interface. This is a bit trickier, but still doable. IPredator has a nice blog entry on this: https://blog.ipredator.se/howto/restrict...art-1.html

The VM option will work as well, with the added benefit that you can run other apps through the DSL connection as needs require. It is obviously the most resource intensive, when running.

I think I would like to stick to my present (also bloated) client, as many torrents are in a semi-finished state and it has huge history.
I'll read up on the Firewall link you have mentioned. Many thanks.

VM looks good. Yes, I suppose non-torrent direct file downloads will also require the DSL.
I have a dual-core with 2 GB. Will give it a try FWIW.

Am running low on disk space. I guess I may have to buy a new internal hard disk for the VM or clear up enough space for it to run.

The DSL should be ready in a couple of days hopefully and I should be able to actually try things out. Thank you for the clear info.

One question. Do I have to do something to prevent my browser(s) from using the DSL instead of just the ADSL ?
Perhaps, IE Tools -> LAN -> Properties -> TCP/IP settings will take care ?

When you have more than one interface, you can order them so your computer will use whichever one you tell it to use first. All traffic will go through this primary interface unless it is down, has no route for a particular packet, or firewall rules dictate otherwise.

Thanks kjf. I won't hold you up. Am guessing it must be close to bed time for you.
I'll do some reading meanwhile. Will update.

Smile No worries. But you are right, it is past my bed time.

If you have an old computer laying around, you could set up a dedicated seed box on the faster connection.

Thank you SF.

I have only one PC. Not too old :-)
But yes, am inclined towards the 2 computer model, primarily for ease of setup and management.
I'll enquire about any 2nd hand PC and try your suggestion. Now i'll have to read up on seedboxes :-)

I came across 'VirtualBox' (VM) and this book which had just been uploaded (a sign from above ?!)
https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/9665257/...irtualBox_[PDF]_StormRG_

VirtualBox is free and looks stable. But it will be hard work setting it up.
Am going to give it a try sometime if possible and see how it goes.
But i'll proly go for two computer setup in the long run.

Meanwhile, it'll be good old-fashioned way.
Plug-in the wire for faster connection to my Ethernet when I torrent and the wire for slower connection when I browse.

This should help you learn to set up a seedbox.

Thanks SF. I have Win 7, but i'll get it anyway.
I've just begun with Wikipedia article. I prefer reading and absorbing it slowly. :-)

Because of the cap on download limit, my upload speed will also dip (heavily) once I cross the limit.
So right now am downloading judiciously and seeding as much as possible while within the limit.
I was told uploaded data does not get counted in. But i'll have to check that to be sure.

Looks like that torrent itself needs a Seedbox. I'll surely seed it after completion. :-)
