Trusted/VIP vs Not
#1
Question
Hello Guys,

I've been using TPB for quite some time now (I freak when it's down-couldn't live without it!) and almost ALWAYS get my torrents from "Trusted" or "VIP" users...What I'm wondering is what gives a user a particular status???

There are way less TRUSTED users vs VIP users. What makes someone a VIP? Are they more trustworthy to not have malicious torrents than anyone else, or a "Trusted" user?

Thanks!

There are way less TRUSTED users vs VIP users. No, there are way MORE trusted users than VIP's. It might seem the other way around but that's because, other things being equal, people who upload more are more likely to be given VIP status. What makes someone a VIP? The factors are many and varied. They're not explicitly set down nor discussed in detail publicly but, in general, the more quality uploading someone does, the more considerate they are in dealing with their fellow uploaders, downloaders and site staff, and the less they attempt to profit from sharing, or to overtly seek status, the more likely they are to be awarded higher status. Are they more trustworthy to not have malicious torrents than anyone else, or a "Trusted" user? Yes. The harder a status is to gain the more valuable it becomes and the less likely it will be jeopardised by uploading crap. But, mistakes can be made, accounts can be hijacked, etc. so no status can guarantee the quality of the next torrent.

Thanks!

None of which means you shouldn't download from members-without-status. All Trusted and VIP members started somewhere, and they didn't become trustworthy when they were given status, they were given status because they were trustworthy.

Just take a bit more care. Don't ever be the first one to download anything (better still, don't download anything the day it's uploaded--give the young and the reckless, and the site staff, time to delete the majority of the crap). Consider the "plausibility" of the torrent--stuff does leak early from time-to-time but the chances that next season's premier episode of Game of Thrones will be uploaded here, in a RAR file, by someone called qwerty785 who has never uploaded anything before and who advises you to ignore "false positives" from your anti-virus are pretty slim.

Consider the description, the file list, the torrent comments, and the uploaders other torrents. Google the torrent hash--if the torrent doesn't exist anywhere else then greater caution is warranted. If it has been available on KAT for a year already and has lots of positive comments there then it's probably OK.

Apparently the decision about who is 'trusted' or 'VIP' is made by the moderators at this site. My observation would be that the decision making process is pretty subjective rather than objective, (ie the decision is not made based upon a fixed number of torrents having been released, or x number of torrents over y period of time). I have seen individuals who have only released 2-4 pages of torrents with a 'trusted' icon and others who have released literally hundreds of torrents who have not received anything. Perhaps there is some hidden criterion in there that I don't understand, but if the process is this subjective, it brings into question how much actual value these classifications are, and does tend to smack of some sort of favouratism.

It seems to me that you would be better served by making your own evaluation; if you find someone who releases torrents that you download on a regular basis, and you have found these torrents to be of good guality then de facto you have found a 'trusted' uploader, and that is all you need to know.

Cheers

Yes, that's what I just said.

And rightly so.

If we agreed, and announced, that we would give Trusted status to everyone who had uploaded, say, 60 torrents (ie. if we were objective) this is just some of what would happen:

1. Scammers and spammers would upload 60 mp3 singles or ebooks or something else tiny, wait for (or even come here to demand) their Trusted status, then start pumping out their shit. Knowing that many sites subscribe to TPB's feeds of "Trusted" torrents and that many individuals are less diligent when downloading "trusted" torrents.

2. Many uploaders would dupe content simply to get their numbers up.

3. Legitimate lower-volume uploaders would be discouraged and perhaps put off sharing. That would include many of the people who create original content, rather than the torrent-whores who simply copy torrents from other sites/other uploaders.

4. Legitimate uploaders of larger torrents, such as season and series packs, who might only upload 1 10GB torrent a month, would be discouraged and perhaps put off sharing.

5. Downloaders, who can currently rely on Trusted status to actually mean something, would no longer be able to.

ie. it would be a total fucking disaster in every possible way

Why would you really care if you are a trusted or vip or any other status at all? Think about it people, the idea in the first place of a torrent is to share with others who are less fortunate, the people who can't afford to purchase dvd at the reducouless pricess now a days. Our main objective is to provide information and files to others. Sometimes I copy torrents from other sites and post the files here simply because I have 50MBPS internet and I know although others have the same files on the same torrent my torrent will always provide faster downloads which in return will allow others to have access to the files they are needing faster. I don't care about the status, I care to know that today I helped someone by sharing what I have. Most of the torrents I provide to upload are all Limited collection box set edition of either movies and tv shows that normally would just take forever to download from other users, that's the stuff that makes me feel good about my self, knowing someone else is satisfied with their new movie they were having problems obtaining. When I first started downloading from Pirate Bay my internet speed was horrible and it took almost 3 weeks to download the complete seasons of "Seinfeld", I now offer the file to share and notice users normally download the entire collection within a matter of a few days. For me that is enough status to satisfy. Let's all keep that state of mind of sharing and everyone will enjoy, especially if everyone left all their files sharing at night while sleeping and not just one or two. Notice the seeders vs leechers, is just down right pathetic to see how many people are just selfish. why sould you not share the files after you just downloaded for free. Lets all give more than what we take and with that state of mind this world will better it self if you put that in to practice throughout your life in every thing you do.
Sorry for the long reply but this is a very important subject for me.
Thanks for reading, i hope at least one person will change by these words.

Trusted/VIP or just a user? That's not exactly a science of unknown. I simply download what I need. I don't see who has uploaded it. But yaa I have my favourite uploaders whose account I check periodically and strangely they all are Trusted/VIP. But it's not a matter that I won't use others. Everyone here is to share & I respect everyone's struggle. And, as far as it concern to integrity of torrent then I only follows:

* Don't download any application (software) from unknown (& a new user)
* Avoid torrents having some unknown trackers (Google the hash)
* Read Comments
* Let mods do their homework Tongue (And, you too can help by reporting fakes & spams)

And, at last by adding your review on torrents for others help. Wink

If the torrent needed is only available through a general user then I read the comments and see what people say about it before I download it. I think most people do their best to download for a green, pink, or blue skull. I usually do.
