Torrenting slowly dying - will it survive?
#1
Over the years, especially since streaming platforms came out, I noticed that torrenting has become less and less of a thing.  Torrents no longer last long before it expires with no seeds, and the more specialized and less popular items which used to be available as torrents and even celebrated as one of the few places to get those, no longer really exist. So I was curious to see what some people think about the future of torrenting.  Will it survive or will it eventually go the way of Napster.

Thank you,

I'm not sure I agree with you. I think that the issue is in the eye of the beholder. It actually depends on where you go and what you've been using. When I come around here, I always see that everyone is using torrents. Sure, new things are coming out, but as long as people want to use a free alternative, torrenting will always be there for that crowd. Even things like the library or direct downloading are still existent to this day. As long as there is still a use for torrents, it will never go away.

EDIT: To come to think of it, the fact that the Feds are trying to shut out torrents makes it the best example that torrenting will not go away, because everything they do always achieves the opposite effect.

So yeah, while you continue your observations, think of that.

Hope this helps.

I agree with RobertX - this is all down to your personal perception.

Torrenting isn't dying at all and will never die as long as content is geo-locked and overpriced. The OP has made lots of sweeping statements (down to their own personal perception) that can't be backed up with any stats.

Torrenting is totally fine, don't know what you're trying to say... From where I can see there's no issues...

I've had loads of traffic recently, put a few torrents up over the last few weeks and had a lot of traffic and people tend to come and join in the swarm on and off all the time...

I would also say that the Weekend is much more popular and people download then, during the week things can ease off.  I would say Saturday and Sunday there's lots of people who are downloading but they have to go to work again on Monday usually so they tend to switch their computer off..

If you have the right kind of VPN then you're fine.  You need to be protected these days from the harm of the internet.  If you've got your VPN on and you have a kill switch and you can control it so that if the VPN drops and you lose the connection the client won't continue and just shut down to prevent any harm being caused.

I've tried a few VPNs over the years and I think they are amazing and I like the idea of getting a really good one that protects you so you can be safe on the internet and not be at risk from harmful people who just want to cause trouble and ruin your whole torrent party...

It's amazing really also you don't need to be running Linux either to be safe, you can run Windows 10 or 11 these days and be safe just the same.  But if you're on Windows then I suggest a good program to block Windows telemetry and then you'll be fine.  Doing a bit of research into Windows telemetry is not hard and YouTube will tell you all kinds of things so you can stay safe from harm.  If anybody tells you you need to be on Linux these days to be safe well don't listen to them because it's all lies and Windows is totally fine but just make sure you're on a local account and not a Microsoft one.

I love to torrent myself, torrent all the time and have done a huge amount of it over the years and been totally safe from harm.  I've had many downloaders who have downloaded all kinds of things from me and this makes for a happy world which can still access all kinds of content without having to join crappy sites like Netflix or something of the similar kind.  I would say that torrenting is very popular and still very good and a good way to source all kinds of music and games and movies.  The thing with me though I have no use for downloading FLAC audio and I realised some time ago the market is ruined now for music players so I resulted in getting myself an Apple product from China to solve all the issues.  The apple product I use now is great but cannot play FLAC so I'm not interested in all that FLAC thing anymore I prefer MP3 instead it takes up less room and there's really no difference in sound quality as far as I can see.  Music players now are so expensive that it's not worth being ripped off you could end up paying that much for a player that you would be a fool just to play FLAC on the go.  I moved back to MP3 because getting an Apple product from China is the best way to experience music now on the go and you save such a lot of money.  These high quality digital players are a con now and you shouldn't be fooled by the prices.

Torrents are amazing but just make sure you protect and protect as much as possible.  I think that torrents are very much a thing and the more people drop sites like Netflix and get a VPN so they can torrent the better... Smile

As long as I seed they come.

There's also the preservation factor, with content that you can't find elsewhere but in torrenting trackers.

It may not be the most used medium for sharing, but great ideas like p2p seldom die. It is good that there are other options like streaming services, but often in such platforms there is only trendy content, and if you want something specific, torrenting is the way to go.

Well it's good when your trying to save and preserve something that's popular but look for something obscure chances are you'll find the torrent dead  having no seeders so can't get it. And  you have to either sit and wait for someone to show up and seed it so you can DL it or look some place else maybe even concider buying it! TBH I don't have a problem with buying something that's worth it especially if it's rare but hell is it inconvenient to have to rely THAT MUCH on other people in order to DL something.

This is IMO both the blessing and curse of file-sharing thru BitTorrent because if you got a lot of people you can DL the torrent faster because you'll be  gettin small bits from lots of people all at the same time but if it has no people seeding you'll never get it unless someone comes on line and seeds it. Thats why I came up withh the idea of seeding the items that I think is valuable 24/7 on my server machine that is on 24/7. Except it's off now because I have to get a new PSU because the curent one is dead.....But ass soon as I can i'll  get it back up 'n running and be back to seeding the good stuff..Its still on the HD thankfully its not going nowhere

Other than that torrenting is perfect

And of course I totally agree that many things that are not available(movies for example0 on other platforms like streaming services are available on BT web sites and it's amazing..but then again many obscure movie torrents is dead and it's NOT cool
