Ripping CDs & DVDs

Hi everyone,

I'm new to ripping even though I've heard of it for years.

So I was told to use Windows Media Player (WMP) for CDs & DVD Power or something for DVDs?

What software do you find is the easiest to remove the DVDs & put the files on the computer?

I'm moving & I don't want to lug all these CDs & DVDs around.

Now I've read that some people don't like MP3 b/c of the sound quality. Does ripping it mean the quality is diminished?

Lastly, when I rip, does that mean the CD/DVD are ruined, or can I give it away or sell it to someone else?

For the highest quality you should be looking to encode to flac, not mp3.
Mp3 is referred to as a lossy codec, due to the information lost from the original when using it to compress files. Mp3 is good for storage on small devices or where quality is not so important. Flac on the other hand is a lossless codec, in that it can be used to create a one for one copy of the original disc.

For the most accurate ripping of CDs I use Exact Audio Copy. It's free, takes a bit of setting up, but does the best job to my current knowledge.

Rip to flac for storage, then use dBpoweramp to encode to mp3 for your smaller devices.

If you just want quick mp3 rips in fair quality, WMP will do the job.

As for DVDs, the old school DVDDecrypter still works with the majority of DVDs. Or DVDFab, or AnyDVD for an up to date software. tpb can sort you out.

Yea, if you got alot of space, Rip the Audio-CDs to FLAC and rip the DVD movies in 1:1 copy

Since you're moving, I presume you dont have time, but ripping at the fullest speed might not damage the disc, but i can have quality problems with the digital file.

Personally, I dont mind ripping at 4x speed on both Audio and DVD, cause I'm not an audiophile freak who uses EAC to record at 0.25x Speed

Ok, this is all new to me, so I'll sound ignorant I'm sure as I don't understand speeds & I probably won't until I've done a few & see the different options.

Hi there,

I tried to search both DVDDecrypter & DVD Decrypter & nothing was found on TPB.

Yesterday I had problems searching shows that were there, just not showing up, so I don't know if that's the reason as this has happened to me a few times now.

Ok, so I've got the EAC on my computer.

Can someone pls. give me instructions on how to use it.

The last time I used this was ten years ago, but it should give enough clue of what's like using this software.

Insert the CD, make EAC recognise it and load the trackes, and then just pick which ones to extract... at least that's how I hyposthesise.

Like I mentioned, it is outdated so it can't crack all dvds, just most of them. DVDFab or AnyDVD are on tpb and up to date.

I'm running on a Windows 7 computer and have been using AppGeeker DVD Ripper for years. It's the best ripping software out there, nothing dodgy about it at all.

It has Mac verison available if you want to handle that task on a Mac.

No CD in hand, so I don't know the way to rip the file from CD.
