Ripping CDs & DVDs

It rips audio CDs to FLAC, as far as I know, though I don't use FLAC.

It's also a Data CD/DVD burner, audio CD burner, and a VCD/SVCD burner.

This is why I like it.

I really don't undestand all the EAC thing. You need over an hour to rip a cd, and the result is exactly the same as the one you get with any other program. The real point here is the log file. And what is that? It's just a text file that "proves" that everything was alright. It's used in private torrent sites, if you upload something whitout it, it will be deleted when someone upload the same cd with log file, that's all the "importance" of log files. In a public site like TPB it is useless.
I've seen many torrents with logs (which means the ripper "knows better") with essential flaws, like mono recordings ripped in stereo (double size).
Public sites are better than private ones, so fuck them and their stupid rules.
I use freerip for CDs (it can rip in mono and you can merge tracks, with cue files if you want to burn cds) and DVDfav for DVDs.

I mean... if you're only ripping for a site like the Pirate Bay, then yeah, you're absolutely right.

Exact Audio Copy is much more for quality-control freaks who want to make sure they're getting the absolute best rip of a CD they can get... like me. Big Grin

I trade Led Zeppelin bootlegs, as well as torrent at private trackers like What.CD, so EAC is essential because I don't use MP3 except for personal use.

For bootlegs, uncompressed WAV is wanted, but for internet trading, we use FLAC. Using MP3 will get you a bad reputation with traders, because these are bootlegs, after all, and since many are audience recordings, they are already low quality to begin with. Ripping these to MP3 pretty much guarantees you'll never trade Zeppelin, or Floyd, or Dylan, or most other classic artist bootlegs again, because most people won't trade with you.

For What.CD, they have very high standards of what's expected with an upload, and EAC provides all the needed components and then some, all in one neat little package.

Even where I do use MP3, I still prefer uncompressed or FLAC, and I make my own MP3s from there, using Trader's Little Helper.

It's all about quality. For a site like Pirate Bay, it's obviously quite nice, but not required. But for bootleg trading/torrenting or private trackers like What, it's pretty much required.

So whether or not you use EAC depends entirely on what you're looking to rip and why, as well as how long you're willing to wait and the quality you're looking for in your rip.

Hi,

Well I'm not trading like you are, but I have very sensitive senses (or at least I used to until I started decaying), so I can usually tell quality from crap immediately.

This is all for me b/c I'm moving & want to be able to use an MP3 player with speakers instead of a shelf stereo. Or to plug in my headphones for my meditations.

I also have DVDs I need to rip.

EAC is causing major problems though & I'm not happy about this. I have to keep rebooting every time it finds errors on the CD, b/c it won't finish & it screws up the CD Rom Sad

Someone came over & figured out the CDROM issue. VLC was stopping it from working & opening. Who knew.

did you try restarting the computer before calling your friend?

No I didn't b/c I didn't even think of that, & the only reason I figured out that would solve the problem is b/c my friend by accident pressed my restart button & that cleared up the problem, but I can NOT get the CD Rom to work when ending the process Sad It's either restart or it's toast, so I'm not happy about this.

Ok, another friend told me about this CD ripping software & it ALSO does Flac & I'm now in LOVE with it.

Not only is it 10 times faster that EAC, it ripped the CDs that EAC said had errors & I've had NO CD ROM problems.

It's called EZ CD Audio Converter.

That's an problem with Windows to be honest. I have the similar problems when I try to ripp at full speed, and I have the exact same problem you had when I try to watch Bluray movies with PowerDVD. It's because the system locks the drive in a similar way it locks a harddrive I believe. As long as it's accessed, nothing is allowed to eject it.

Well I don't know how my friend got it to eject without me having to restart, but we got it to shut down EAC & open.

But that's in the past, I didn't have that problem with the new software.

Speaking of software, we can't figure out how Fab DVD works. He thinks we have to add something with the add button, but I say why should we have to if the file is checked off after FAB recognizes it from the CD ROM drive.

We click start & it does something for like 10 seconds, then it says it's finished, but it hasn't ripped anything that can be watched.

Anyone know what we are doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi, thanks for your post.
When I said the file is the same with any program, I really mean it. You don't get a "more perfect rip" with EAC, you get exactly the same flac. Thinking otherwise is just a fiction. I rip to flac, so all the mp3 thing is not needed.
All the "high standards" of private sites doesn't have to do anything with music. They are about ratios, and "donations" and stuff like that.
Private sites are about getting uber-awesome collections , and public sites are about spreading culture, so there's no really a competition here, we are talking about different things.

USe FabDVD to make the DVD regionfree, and then use DVDDecrypter instead for ripping. Also, do not try to ripp at full speed as it might lock your DVD-rom drive again Tongue

Ok, I'm using DVD Fab now for ripping & I thought it was just the DVDs being of low quality that was causing the issue, but maybe it's not.

I starting ripping another DVD that clearly doesn't look as good on a monitor vs. a TV screen, but it's still much better quality than what the ripped version looks like which is warped & terrible.

I even changed the one setting to "High Quality Encoding 2 pass", & it still looks like shit.

Can someone tell me what to change in here so it at least looks the same as the DVD itself.

Thanks

As I understood, you wanted copies of the DVDs. It sounds like you're re-encoding them. That's not the same thing. When you copy the contents of a DVD you get a VIDEO_TS folder with .VOB files in it. This is an exact copy of the DVD.
When you encode a DVD you generally make lower quality versions of the original. Encoding to decent quality takes a bit of experience and know how.

Try one of these to copy the DVD> https://thepiratebay.se/search/dvdfab%20...opy/0/99/0

If you want to rip DVDs without compression (without losing any quality) the best program I've used is DVDShrink; It's very easy to use. You can select languages, subtitles, menus, etc. If you want to burn it afterwards it's better to select ISO file as output. It's a free program.
