Renewing Your Downloads

This topic is related to any content you can get your hands on these days, but, since the scope is so broad, I can't just put it in any one of the posts alone.

My question now is: do you renew your downloaded files and put the older versions in the crapper?

To clarify, if a new piece of technology comes to town, say a new codec, do you download (and seed!) the older version of the data?

I ask because I don't know what to do. I spent the last year getting Star Trek episodes off the Internet. But now that the episodes are at a nearby library, I am debating of whether I should go there instead.

What do you think? What do you suggest? What did you do? You can badger me, run me to the ground, etc.
