Random Usernames attributed to posts

Strange thing happened today.

I replied to a user imeem  on the Isn't Piratebay Too Old thread.

It transpires I actually replied to Spud17,  according to the quote that was created in my reply, and only1joe posted exactly the same comment as me and then deleted my post. While he was at it, he also changed the name of imeem  to ZhiKonNi. 




It looks like the server is serving up random usernames for all posts every time the page is refreshed.

Isn't the reason obvious?

Someone who has a grudge against this board has hacked into the server and is determined to bring down this site.

Maybe it's someone who was banned at some time and they're mad about that?

Or more likely, it could be some record company executives or their stooges. Those guys will resort to most any kind of dirty trick.

First off, they tried a DoS attack. But the mods here quickly thwarted that. So they must have hacked into the software and arranged to have all User IDs scrambled up. Don't you think?

Better hold on! Can't tell what they might try next!

It's a simple security measure. Users post all sorts of information about themselves which can be aggregated over time and used to identify people.

Randomizing the attribution (of a username to the posts made by that user) makes that impossible.

Of course it does mean you have to engage your critical thinking faculties when reading: just because something appears to have been posted by Moe doesn't mean it is true or sensible. And just because something appears to have been posted by dolly_cat doesn't mean it is nonsense. But you should be engaging your brains anyway.
