(REQ) Fan Vid Upscaling?
#1
I've obtained a few fan-made MSTings over the years. Most of them are pretty funny, but the video quality isn't always that great. Maybe some of you have seen them before. I might not have the skills to give them the fine tuning they need, but maybe someone else does?

by Ryan K Johnson:
-Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
-Highlander II: The Quickening

Mystery Fandom Theater 3000:
-Little Red Riding Hood
-Invasion Of The Animal People
-Starcrash
-The Eliminators
-Shorts!

Mystery Science Tulsa 3000:
-Timecop

Brian Uiga:
-Doctor Who: Time And The Rani (missing)

Linkara:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Other:
-Gymkata
-Battle Of The Worlds

I posted a similar thread no to *long* ago as I'm a fan of some of the smaller riffers. If you want to list the resolution of your files I'll compare the ones I have.
I'll browse my collection and see what I have.

That said, graphic design is my thing but I've only ever dabbled in video editing, so upscaling these with any discernible increase in quality is a skill that has eluded me.

EDIT: a single letter.

I have been watching the progression of AI upscaling like a hawk for exactly this reason, and can say that we've definitely reached the point where upscaling some already 720p or 1080p content is now worth the electric bill; however, 480p content is still very difficult to upscale, and looks only a tiny bit better. I'm kind of waiting for a big breakthrough moment before I upscale all my older rifftrax.

I did a cursory check of my Mystery Fandom Theater 3000 files and they are all locked at 480p. Did a quick check online and that's the highest res I could find.
It doesn't help with the desire to upscale, but if I have any of those at a higher res, I am happy to share.

Would the PAL encodes be 540p? Thus better to upscale?

AI improvement is a fantasy. Enjoy the original Blade Runner moment when Harrison Ford says "enhance". Its still science fiction. Wonder where all the DeepFakes went? Nobody wanted to mention the rules that lighting across the face must not change, that wild movements of the head will not work, and more.

Its a nice idea that computers can do anything with visuals, but that is only true if you can throw millions of dolllars at the problem. And we don't have that. If you had $100m you could get the whole original cast to refilm the first 10 seasons in widescreen 8k, i'll wager.

From another perspective, we're getting to see these relatively low quality editions of MST3K the original run in BETTER quality than people at home generally did at the time. Glass half-full.

Could I make a request that's similar though : The MST3K episodes STARCRASH and CARNIVAL MAGIC are locked in with stuttery video. There are better quality versions out there! And those are two of my favourites from that season. Anyone capable of editing the smooth video in?

The OP was talking about the fan made MST content. We're getting some pretty high-quality MST3k material now that more of the masters have been found but the fan stuff usually started off as lower quality and after multiple copies being made (this was the old days when you had to copy analog tapes & the video quality decreased noticeably every time you added a generation).
I used to have great copies of the Ryan K. Johnson films but lost those tapes in a flood along with some other things that I think are now gone forever. Ryan and I don't really talk anymore and I probably wouldn't get a new copy from him if I asked. I do know that he was sending a digital copy on a burned DVD to people who wrote to him asking for one. I think the person either had to supply the disc or something to keep him from spending any money on it but he didn't want to take cash for obvious reasons. Having said that, I'd love copies of those if anyone has them in a watchable condition.

I've been deep-diving! Do you still have these MFT3000 files? I've only got 2 of varying quality.
