Question about how Virtualbox runs Windows games
#1
I'm planning to get a new computer that will run Linux Mint or any Ubuntu derivative, and I'm also planning to run a Windows VM on said computer for games, for LAN play or single player.

How well does it run?

My question goes mainly to ill88eagle since he did claim that he uses a Windows VM on his xubuntu.

How does it run, ol'chum?

define game.

anything that doesnt need a 3d render should work fairly well as long as you've dedicated enough resources to it.

Games will run as well as they would natively on the same hardware as long as you pass through sufficient resources.

Some titles won't run simply because they have anti-cheat prevention that does not allow the game inside the VM.

I run windows 7 and windows XP in virtual machines for legacy gaming and other niche purposes. You can manually allocate the resources your game needs in the vm settings. 3D rendering is possible if you enable it (you need a decent gfx card), and you can select how much vram you want the machine to eat. When set up properly I run FPS RPGs like Fallout NV and skyrim with no noticeable lag or bugs - I allocate 2 cpu cores (out of 4) 8gb ram (out of 16), enable 3d acceleration (openGL) and 256 mb vram. As for newer triple A stuff I cant really testify. I havent been doing any LAN gaming but I can't imagine why it would be a problem if you can connect to the interwebs from your VM.

Thanks guys.

For some reason, most games that I run on VMs don't display full screen. They would occupy full screen, but would display on a smaller part in the centre.

Yes, they're Windows VMs, namely Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Winodws NT 4.0

EDIT: Should add that by most, I mean non-3D games like Diablo I and Warcraft II: Battle.NET Edition.

I played with VBox a while back, but was particularly annoyed at the limited amount of maximum video i was allowed to use. It would have made it worthless for may graphics apps.
I dont know if things have changed, or if there are other VM apps that allow more reasabile allocations. Hopefully there are....

You are running virtualbox in fullscreen I suppose - older games (in their own fullscreen mode) will resize the resolution to 800x600 and display in that size on black background - I make a point out of running my games (and virtual box) in windowed mode - some require me to set virtualbox's resolution to match their own or refuse to run (vanilla BG1). There is a scalemode which enables me to scale up 800x600 windows to readable (I play a lot of text heavy RPGs) - it might work for sull screen mode as well?

I can max out my machines vram in virtualbox (6.1). I think it depends on your gfx card. I had the same problem on my hp craptop (antiquated pavillon).

Excuse my ignorance, ill88eagle, but what is "BG1?"

EDIT: ill88eagle, I tried your suggestion, and it works! Basically, what I did:

1. Put the host OS, in this case, Linux Mint 20.1, on 800x600.
2. Put the guest OS, in this case, Windows XP, on 800x600.
3. Run the game.
4. Profit.

Thanks guys, and thanks ill88eagle, for the suggestions.

Not trying to stray too far off-topic, so I'll just leave this as a direct yes/no question to you, ill88eagle, but do you use Wine for your games?

I stopped fumbling with wine about a year ago when an update broke functionality in a bunch of win32 programs.
