In a dhrupad performance the exposition of the Raga through the abstract syllabic alap is followed by the singing of a composed melody with lyrics, set to a tala or a cycle of beats accompanied by a barrel drum – the pakhāwaj. Strictly speaking it is the composed melody, which usually has four parts, that bears the name dhrupad, although the term is now used to identify the entire genre including the alap. A Dhrupad Composition actually embodies within it all the principles of the music, and serves as a model of the exposition of the raga, composed by a master dhrupad singer not only for his own performance, but as a musical statement for subsequent oral transmission to succeeding generations. Compositions represent the fixed repertoire of Dhrupad and encapsulate the musical knowledge and wisdom of many generations of Dhrupad singers. Compositions were often created to illustrate specific aspects of the grammar of music. The lyrics of compositions contain a wealth of information about history, folklore, mythology, philosophy and the conceptual framework of music. In an oral tradition compositions of course mutate with time and one finds many different versions of the same composition prevalent in different traditions in different parts of the country.

VA - Afternoon Ragas 1992 ABEE



The mid-day sun ushers in the Sarang group of ragas, which are all bright, vivid and lively. The pathos and gravity of the early morning ragas is quite dispelled by the bright sunshine and the earlier introspectiveness seems to give place to a more direct view of life and nature. The Sarangs are derived from different scales, denoting a wide variety of moods. This volume brings the exuberant qualities of afternoon with ragas like Shuddha Sarang, rendered by Amjad Ali Khan on the sarod, raga Sughrai, sung by Mallikarjun Mansur and raga Gaud Sarang, sung by Padma Talwalkar.

The afternoon shows a wide variety of moods and flavours and in the Sarangs, the most common characteristic is the strong shuddh rishabh. The rishabh forms an interval in combination with the shadaj suggesting control, stability and contentment. The ragas in this volume include raga Brindavani Sarang, rendered on flute by Hariprasad Chaurasia. One may imagine that this is how Krishna must have played for the gopis in Brindavan and this Sarang is named for just such an association. This is followed by raga Madhmad Sarang, sung by Pandit Jasraj and raga Dhani rendered by Shahid Parvez on the sitar.

Morning Ragas 1992 ABEE



Description

The musical morning begins long before sunrise. The dark hour just before dawn has always been associated with prayer and meditation. In a different context, this hour also witnesses the pain of parting from the beloved. Early morning ragas are therefore sombre and devotional for the most part, while some also carry a feeling of universal sorrow and longing.

The first raga of the morning is Lalit. The gravity and pathos of sandhi prakash ragas, or ragas of the time when darkness meets light, emanate from the use of the flattened komal rishabh and the komal dhaivat. The major morning ragas such as Bhairav and Todi also exhibit this feature.

As the sun rises and begins to light up the sky, ragas derived from the Asavari group, for instance Jaunpuri, enter the field. In these, the flat rishabh is abandoned and gives place to its sharp counterpart. However, the dhaivat remains flat and continues to impart a quality of wistfulness to these ragas, which are generally more luminous and less inward.

The most important group of ragas assigned to late morning when the sky is fully lit up is the Bilawal family. These ragas use the major scale where all the notes are sharp. There is now a distinct change of mood, a feeling of coming out of oneself into a pleasing world. All Bilawals exude self-confidence, stability and tenderness.
