Problem with skipping & pixelation when converting DVD VOB files to AVI.

I am trying to convert some VOB videos into AVI videos for torrenting. I use MediaCoder, and I have tried the XVID and h.264 codec, and they both seem to have problems.

the XVID conversions I make play fine in Windows Media Player, but show squares in VLC. The h.264 video does not have squares, but has dropped frames on some computers.

This file shows five minutes of video that plays fine in WMP, but squares in VLC.

What is the best MediaCoder settings to use for converting VOB to AVI? Is there a tutorial on ripping DVD's?

I would just use MKVs instead of AVIs. AVIs are good if you absolutely need some space, but MKV is not much bigger. In fact, my opinion dictates that MKVs replace AVIs. To rip a DVD directly to MKVs, I use Handbrake (http://www.handbrake.fr). It takes longer if you consider the DVD-ripping and the encoding, but it's worth it.

If you are unwilling to re-rip, try Aiseesoft Total Video Converter; this baby allows you to re-encode your files into other formats. There's a large host, You can get it on The Pirate Bay. I'll leave it up to you to figure out.

Maxisongs, you spoke of pixels. Can it be that you're using the lowest resolution?

You also spoke of frame-skipping. Can it be that your computers are of low specs?

The resolution is 720x480.


The frame skipping occurs on computers of lower specs, like in a library. My home computers do not do this problem, but after all good seeding requires that your videos be as compatible as possible to as many computers as possible.

Do you have all the DVDs you want to rip available in possession? If so, let's do it again.

Like I said, it takes up time to rip and encode, but it's worth it.

EDIT 2: Before you changed the original post, I recall you telling that you ripped the DVD with another program before trying to convert the contents (i.e. VOBs) into AVIs. What I would do is to find another ripper; Smartripper is perhaps the main culprit. Am I correct?

My problem is solved! I got Auto Gordian Knot installed, and I am ripping with it set to 350mb output size for a 45-minute video. Thank you for the suggestion!

My only complaints is that it is not portable, and I have to manually click on each file I want to convert. There are links online that claim they have portable versions of this software and automatic file loaders, but they seem so "unofficial" and unreliable.

If anybody knows how to load files into AutoGordianKnot in batches or automatically, and if there is a reliable portable version that does not produce errors when run, please let me know.

I found SmartRipper was not causing synch/pixellation errors, it was how I was encoding them.
