I'm not trying to troll but I have a question that's bugging me.
Today we have access to information and knowledge as never before in the history of humanity. So can someone please tell me why it seems to me that the number of dumb stupid people is growing at an alarming rate?
Please don't tell me that this is all in my imagination because I know it's not, there's other people that are saying similar.

internet is just a communication tool, it's not a fountain of information and knowledge as you think.
first you must understand there are two things: information and disinformation, like real knowledge and bullshit.
suppose real knowledge is that kind of information that is kept top secret within the CIA. that kind of real knowledge is rare, and you don't see it laying around everywhere on the internet because, again, the internet is just a communication tool.
real information is rare, but dsinformation is not, disinformation is everywhere, the internet is full of bullshit. (disinformation=entertainment, movies, musics, daily news, porn, games, social networking, there you have 99% of the internet)
on top of that, as a tool, people do whatever they want with the internet, so give a tool to a stupid person and he will do stupid things. intelligent people are rare, stupid and ignorant people are plenty, so most people use internet for useless things.
dissemination of true knowledge is discouraged, sometimes even punishable. dissemination of disinformation is encouraged and most of the time rewarded.
and then you must realise there are the people who consume content, and the people who create content, in other words, people who browse the web and people who make/feed the web.
the internet is relatively new, it will take some generations before we can see some sort of revolution in humanity. the revolution will not come from the internet, for it is just a tool, it's the peole who have to wake up and ultimately do something.

Post split to new thread as it has nothing to do with the original topic.

it probably has something to do with people trying to censor information due to a generalized form of ignorance on their part.

(This post was last modified: Dec 17, 2013, 04:37 am by Vintage television. Edited 1 time in total.)
I received a warning about my response to this thread:
https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-Our-Fre...nd-Culture
And this is what I said to the Admin in a private message. I think I summed up much better what I was attempting to get at in my nice guy round about way.
Quote:We're screaming censorship and for what reason??? The ignorance in society is growing at an alarming rate and it's most likely related to this unprecedented access to information we have. There's no sense in worrying about censorship when the average person lacks the ability to understand what they're reading.
Now I apologize to everyone if I appear to be a neanderthal in my observations and my thinking. But someone would have had to be living under a rock to not notice that collectively society is getting dumber. Everyday I increasingly find myself wondering if the person I'm attempting to have a conversation with has the IQ of a bottle of ketchup. And if I make any attempt to impart or educate someone about an issue I've taken the time to research, I'm called anti-social or treated like some sort of knuckle dragging caveman. I have to say that it's the most infuriating thing I've ever encountered in my life!
So again I'll ask my questions,
How is it that we can have this unparalleled access to information but have such high level of ignorance in society? And why is it growing? And why should I care about censorship when the overall majority of people don't care enough to educate themselves on any issue but are instead more interested in Miley Ray Cyrus or someone/something similar?
so, you think that society is getting dumber? well, as far as society is concerned; what's the point of bothering to create an independent thought when there are certain types of people out there who are perfectly willing to censor the whole of society from any and all information that they don't need?
as i recall, in a different thread regarding fantasy sex porn (theatrical porn), you were in favor of censoring said material partly because you claimed that you would feel afraid if your neighbors enjoyed such material (even if in the privacy of their own homes) and that people didn't need that type of porn. if you are so eager to dictate to the rest of society what to think and even go as far as to support broad enforcement of censorship and society really is getting dumber, it's pretty much all your fault:
if the formation of independent thoughts is an absolute step towards achieving true freedom, then any form of retardation or depravity thereof is simply a form a fascism.
in reality, it's probably just some for of displacement. example:
Thread: What should I think about Fukushima?
why bother coming up with your own opinion on the fukushima issue when you can just ask the forum what you should think.
call it ill phrased, that it's not what you meant or english is not your first language but i strongly believe that on some level, we all say what we mean, actually.

Yes, people in the dumb column seem to be increasing exponentially. Why? Many reasons I think, but mostly I believe it is de-evolution.
All life depends on survival of the fittest. For the last 50 years or so we have made so many advances in medicine and science that no one in first world civilized society need to struggle against nature to stay alive.
Where the slow and weak would ordinarily be allowed to fall from the herd, we instead scoop them up and bring them along, slowing down the rest.
We have gotten used to instant gratification. Intelligent minds continue to dig for answers while simple minds just look at the pretty lights and say "wow".
Look at Big Bang Theory. These guys can build a nuclear accelerator but can't find their asses if they were sitting on their hands. Why is this show so successful?
Because it rings of truth. Intelligence is great, but if you don't know how to start a fire on a cold night you aren't going to last long.
People are experiencing life as a spectator more and more. Life needs to be lived.
There is a saying that I will leave you with that I think applies:
Some people make things happen,
Some people watch things happen,
Some people wonder what happened.

I think it's because it is easier for dumb people to use the net that we are now aware how dumb some people are and how many of them are out there.

I agree with this also. Using social media sites has been quite an eye opener. Mis-information is easy to come by and never goes away. Most folks take things at face value and don't look any further.
