Open Source Office Packages: Which one have you tried and liked?
#1
Hey dudes,

I've downloaded and tried Apache Open Office and Libreoffice. I've vaguely tried Calligra and, while it's a substantial office software package, it doesn't have enough stuff to convince me to switch.

I still have Microsoft Office 2016 in my computer, I use it only as a last resort. I like Libreoffice. Sure, AOO and Libreoffice are alike in every way, Libreoffice is the winner as it keeps updates up the Yin Yang.

Here are the websites for the free and open source packages:

Libreoffice: www.libreoffice.org
Apache Open Office: www.openoffice.org
Calligra: https://www.calligra.org

Download them, try them, decide what's good, and discuss.

I remember once a client of mine give this sneer smile on his face when saw me using AOO, saying that he can't trust something that "free" to maintain his spreadsheets, collections of business offering letters and agreement.

which is contained of, in his argument a "sophisticated" spreadsheets formula's of summing 4 row of numbers and bunch of blank documents with some niche company logo's at it's footers....

I've always been a user of Libreoffice, its not a performance hog, and I always use it to turn in my essays. I have not heard about the other two, but I'll check them out.

Ok, I tried both now. Calligra is not that I really expected, but it seems like a good app to use on the go. AOO on the other hand, is really freaking great. Dude, nice find, I wish I could've used this instead of Libre.

I like how AOO has this right panel, allowing you to change font/style/size and other features on the fly. They both seem so similar, but I feel as if AOO can deliver more than Libreoffice. Only bad thing about AOO I seen yet is that it uses more memory than Libreoffice.

AOO = 40.976K
Libre = 34.392K

I guess for now, Im going to go with Apache Open Office (can't believe its open-source, thxs)

(The forum software doesn't trust me, so the links that correspond to the numbers are in code at the end of my post Blush  )

LibreOffice. It's really stable, has improved the interface and compatibility, fixed a lot of bugs and constantly adds new features.

I find that Calligra doesn't have very good compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, and Apache OpenOffice has seen much less development [1] than LibreOffice in the last five years (even though they are derived from the same codebase, the old OpenOffice.org [2]).

In fact, OpenOffice hasn't released an update for more than a year and has still not fixed a security bug [3] , classified as "Important", from April, which is fixed in LibreOffice. [4] [5]

I think the sidebar exists in LibreOffice too.
