Incorrect. Kickstarter backers got DRM-free downloads of the season.

Incorrect. Every season is on gizmoplex.

The Netflix seasons are on the Gizmoplex. They're just not free on the Gizmoplex like the classic episodes. So maybe that's the source of the confusion.

Also, just checking, was anybody actually excited for their "surgically enhanced" episodes? That has no interest to me at all.

I mean, I'm not watching Manos for the stunning visuals and special effects. It might have been a good gimmick for them to use to re-release the episodes and get people who wanted them to buy them again, but all throughout the campaign they kept hammering on that like it was such a huge boon... yet I never saw any other fan talk about it, or ask for it, or be excited about it, or even mention it.

I enjoyed the Surgically Enhanced episodes they put up before. They're not a massive improvement in quality (especially compared to some of the absolutely amazing work done by some members of this forum), but they were still a nice upgrade over the DVD rips (or even DAP downloads) I've had for years.

I would like them to do more, but I wouldn't want them to throw too much money at it. There's a number of talented folks that would (and have) basically done it for free. I bet if they consulted with some of those people and gave their work official distribution with credit given, some would probably be happy to continue to do it for free.

Seriously?  I was a Kickstarter backer for Season 11.  There were no DRM-free downloads for backers and only Seasons 1-10 are on the Gizmoplex.  It would literally take you 30 seconds to go to the Gizmoplex and see that for yourself.

I have been reading this thread and is appalled how folks are insulting the great Joel and dissing the seasons 11-13 of the show.

Joel has been the reason riffing stuff like Rifftrax, the Mads, and everything else did and this is the thanks he gets?!

I just happened to like the MST3K seasons and love the comedy as well as the recent season.

The reason the funding failed is because of bad timing, after the strikes and because it happened during the holiday seasons.

He will try again so chill!

Funding didn't fail because of the strikes or bad timing.  The actor's strike ended on November 9th.  When Joel did the fundraising for Season 13 the actors who did participate in fundraising watchalongs did it remotely from their own home computers--they were never in the same studio as Joel or each other and the watchalongs were improvised--not rehearsed or written.  If the actors and performers wanted to rally around Joel and try to make Season 14 happen they had two weeks to do something that didn't require them to leave their homes, memorize any lines, or do any rehearsals...and they didn't.  Joel didn't even put a tiny bit of effort into the telethon aspect of the Turkey Day Marathon--all he did was record a single fundraising plea in which he had two lines that was played intermittently between the episodes.  Joel could have, you know, actually appeared live on his own Turkey Day Telethon which was instead 100% pre-recorded, made personal appeals to backers, and displayed a running tally of how close they were to reaching the fundraising goal.  They could have even just flashed where they were in relationship to the fundraising goal onscreen at various points during the telethon instead of making it 100% pre-recorded but Joel took MST3K fans for granted and apparently assumed he would get the money for Season 14 without any actual effort on his part.

Backing Season 13 also turned out to be a terrible value compared with Rifftrax, The Mads, or even a Netflix subscription since the Gizmoplex went nearly a full year without any new content and even the Synthia Selects episodes that Joel could have simply left up for backers were all taken down.

I was a Kickstarter Backer for Season 11.  If Joel is trying to charge backers more to access Season 11 episodes on the Gizmoplex that wouldn't surprise me but the only MST3K episodes that show up with my $150 Season Pass are Seasons 1-10.  I was never offered DRM downloads because I was a backer of Season 11 and have no access on the Gizmoplex to any Season 11 episodes.  Joel did offer DRM-Free downloads of Season 13 but that was not part of the $150 Season Pass--although it's easy to unofficially download the episodes anyway using IDM or something similar because there's no DRM on the Gizmoplex.  Being an MST3K backer is a poor entertainment value compared to Rifftrax, The Mads, Amazon Prime, or even Netflix.

Joel ended up alienating a lot of Season 13 backers for various reasons--poor value for the money, uneven quality of the episodes, the pointlessness and very poor design of the Gizmoplex, the lack of new content after the end of Season 13--and it came back to bite him when he wanted money for Season 14.

I pledged to Season 11, Season 13, and Season 14.  I wanted there to be a Season 14 but it's obviously not going to happen unless Joel makes some changes.

What level did you back Season 11 at? If you did at least $85, you absolutely should have gotten DRM-free downloads. I think they were distributed through VHX and those rewards were later incorporated into the Gizmoplex when that was created. The Gizmoplex Season Pass covered the S13 and Classic episodes (when available), but I don't think they ever promised the Netflix seasons as part of it.

a few weeks back I probably would have agreed, but after watching a bunch of the 'Project MSTie' AI upscale project episodes on youtube I feel different.

there have been some episodes that have always been difficult for me to watch due to blurriness/fuzziness/fogginess, and the upscaled versions on youtube are so much better. they don't hurt my eyes. I was also getting some new jokes because I'd better understand how a quip relates to something on the screen.

ymmv, i wear glasses too and might just be more sensitive to the prints they used that were most lacking in sharpness and definition. but personally I was surprised how much my initially skeptical view changed after watching a few

There seems to be a decidedly far left reaction to the new MST3K, or rather to those that don't think it's particularly good. I've watched a few episodes of the new stuff and it's simply not funny to me, so I'm not inclined to give money to encourage it. Yet, the leftists on this board seem to think it's acceptable to personally attack others for their opinions on these shows, using the tired trope of calling people racist etc and pushing the bizarre notion that somehow having black and gay narrators is inherently "good" and "straight white men" narrators are bad. These people can never answer "why" they think gays and blacks are good, and white males are bad in this show. They just get mad and throw out unacceptable ad hominem attacks. It's incredibly stupid and maniacal to act in this disgusting manner to fellow fans of MST3K and really shows that these people don't care about the actual show or it's quality, but instead just treat MST3K as another vessel to push their political positions. So no, the new MST3K is decidedly lacking in many aspects and I won't be supporting or watching any more of them. I'll be enjoying the original ones, despite their apparent flaws of only starring "straight white males" and the twisted ideology of a minority that somehow that's "bad".
