MST3K Season 11 (new season), Episode 1
#41
what a great episode!

i just finished s11e01 Reptilicus and thoroughly enjoyed it with several pause the show, laugh out loud moments.

i'm a little behind on reading this thread (i still haven't) since i avoid spoilers at all costs but here's a flash review [please beware sloppy writing...]

since this is an internet forum, i'll get the only downer out of the way first:

i had a tough time telling tom/baron and crow/hampton apart when they riffed. i had to turn on the subs and try to train my ear on the subtle differences between their voices. all of the old crow/tom voice combos were easy to tell apart but not now. i hope it's just cause they're new. johah is easy to pick out at least.

the rest is all good.
* invention exchange!
* letters from kids!
* end of episode stinger!
* songs! both in the theater and on the sol
* lots and lots of riffing, no shortage of jokes (season 0 this is not!)
* and a good movie for riffing with good sound and clear video (i.e. not slime people, etc)

there's new stuff and changes that are... different. e.g. the sets and overall production is very polished unlike the old shoe-string budget show, especially in the early days.

also, there's a ton of writers so they were able to cram in jokes in every possible spot during the film.

when the kickstarter was done, joel broke out the $$$ per episode and i noted how much higher it was than the old days. he had said in a panel way back the each episode was costing (ballparking) 150k and even adjusting for inflation, the new episodes cost a TON more. but seeing episode 1 and watching all the credits, i can understand where all the money went. in general, tv production values and costs are way higher than the old days so stuff looks so much more polished now.

overhead gypsy and hovering crow are new twists though i hope they don't overuse in-theater gags.

and the mads lair/set is very big while the sol camera shot makes it feel cramped.

did anyone else notice "the wild rebels" bass line the band uses? Smile

so, here it is, nuMST. i'm thrilled. i don't mind the changes and differences. there's no recreating the exact same mst we all know and love unless we go back in time. i think this is a fantastic restart, at least episode 1, and can't wait to watch more. on to episode 2!

Aside from the fact that I refuse to support anything involving that scumbag Wil Wheaton and/or that fake nerd Felicia Day that he sucks up to, nuMST as a show overall is just not up to my standards. So sorry, guys, but I'm out.

However, from a purely objective view, I'm glad that so many of you are happy with getting a reboot. Have fun with it, I guess.

Hey guys, I literally just made an account to thank you for this. Yes, I did pay for Netflix when they dropped the new season and I did tweet to them several times how happy I was, so I hope they heard me.

Problem is, I just went back to school for the second time and I had to buy all my books out of pocket which left me piss poor for the next couple weeks. I did homework all fucking day and all I wanted to do was watch something I haven't seen a hundred times.

This scratches that itch and I thank you sir. Yes, I will continue to support the show monetarily as soon as I can. I hope you all understand.

Thanks again and have a good night.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, Trolly McTrollface.

Hint: Baron Vaugn is the one that sounds the most like the previous Crows. Tom/Jonah is a legit complaint though, they should pitch shift Tom's voice to be lower, then it would match the older Toms and solve this problem.

I was think that is the biggest problem with the new episodes, All three of their voices are in the same range making it hard to tell them apart. Maybe they could try a little pitch shifting in post production?
