MP3 Players [Standalone] High Capacity
#1
[I know. Why is someone posting about this here?? I recently lost/had stolen a Microsoft Zune 120GB player that is no longer manufactured]

I was looking around for high capacity MP3 players. I saw the 120GB Zune device being sold at some sites for around $500?!!? Wow! It seems as if the lack of affordable high capacity devices being sold might be responsible for this? With one exception:

I was considering an Apple IPod Classic 160GB device. My question:
Will this device or the software [probably Itunes?] hassle me at all about the music I have collected? i.e. Are there any piracy measures in the device or software that make it hard to add/remove "any old" MP3 collection?

There is a website that makes free media-player programs and sells MP3 players. It's Jetaudio: http://www.jetaudio.com/

as far as know, mp3 files do not support drm, so no... it won't be an issue.

Final Question: Do You Have to Use iTunes With an iPod? http://ipod.about.com/od/advanceditunesu...itunes.htm [for example]

I wouldn't say so. I don't think Apple would be that stupid to do so, people will just switch to a more neutral alternative/replacement.

EDIT: But even so, I still wouldn't want an I-Pod, but that's just me.

[My background is all with Zune (for the most part). I am familiar with the Zune software. I have always had all my music stored in Zune/My Music [I renamed this to iPod/My Music]. I would configure the Zune software to "point" to that location. It's a folder for each artist, sub-folder for each album, etc.]
I just installed iTunes. I went to Advanced Preferences>iTunes Media Folder Location and set this to iPod/My Music in the same manner as with the Zune software. It did not seem to find and display all of my music the way the Zune software did. It did not search and find anything. Any ideas?

EDIT: After a quick look, it seems as if iTunes does not scan through my chosen media folder the way the Zune Software does. Maybe I need to start a new thread about iTunes alternatives: http://mp3.about.com/od/essentialsoftwar...r-Ipod.htm; After all, all I want is way to sync my music library with my iPod. I see "foobar" uploaded on a regular basis at TPB.

Why not just use Windows Media Player, or do you have a Mac?

My desktop PC with all of my music has Windows 7 [32-bit]. I was not aware that you could use WMP with an iPod [or how]?

it does that.

you can specify a directory that contains music to load into your library... or you can just add files from different directories that get added to the library.

once the music is loaded into your library, you can decide if you want to sync the entire library or just play lists that you create to sync only certain songs. the same applies to tv shows movies, books, pod casts, etc.

the software is designed for ease of use.

Yes, a classic is a good choice for this. They haven't changed significantly in more than five years, there's a huge variety of third party cables/docks/cases/whatever, and it's the last man standing in terms if high capacity portable media players, pretty much. Yes, iTunes is the main means of dealing with it, but if all you're doing is moving files to and from, it's dead simple. And there is plenty of third party software that works with it on every platform (MediaMonkey on windows is good, and the ipod support in linux is great for classic/non ios devices.

But if you want an alternative... Sansa makes a little mp3 player that is awesome and has microSD support. Buy one of those (clip+ charges vis mini USB and has no AAC support, clip zip charges via micro USB -- much better! -- and does support AAC files). And they support wma, as well as flac, if that means anything to you. Add in a big microSD (128 has been in sale for about a hundred bucks off and on, if you need that much, but 64 GB is really widely available) and you're set.
