Lots of fake torrents
#1
Lots of fake torrents has been uploaded and later removed by admins the last late evenings GMT. Tonight, lots of torrents has been posted as anonymous too. I think that this is a big problem.

What could be the motive for sabotaging the site like this?

Who could be behind this, an individual or an organisation?

What can be done by The Pirate Bay to prevent this?

How soon will these torrents be removed? Is the site supervised 24/7?

Does it take a lot of effort for TPB to monitor the site and remove these torrents?

Is there some way that more people can help?

When this happens, torrents on page 100 in the "recent" view gets pushed to higher pages which can't be viewed. Can the number of pages be increased when this happens?

Could these torrents contain viruses? Could they be downloaded at all?

How is it possible for some of these torrents to have many hundreds of seeders?

Maybe some of my questions are none of my business, so please answer the questions that can be answered.

I love TPB and wish you all the best.

A lot of fake torrents have already been removed now. Thanks TPB! :-)

could be one of those:

RIAA hunting down individuals who share pirated music files, the Business
Software Alliance (BSA) targeting people who pirate software, and the FBI
looking for anyone who breaks copyright laws,
FAST (Federation Against Software Theft), a UK software industry group
(http://www.fast.org.uk); the Software & Information Industry Association
(http://www.siia.net/piracy); the Business Software Alliance
(http://www.bsa.org); and the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (http://www.elspa. com/piracy

I came here just to post something on this, though I am not so interested in conspiracy theories.

Mainly I am curious about the system currently in use to deal with spam, and whether TPB admins need some help or grunt work for that matter?

There seems to be a few identifiable patterns that one could code for, at least until spammers change their tactics again in this spammer cold war (in terms of "weapons" proliferation). Besides the obvious patterns like user account flooding, it might be possible to construct a bayesian algorithm based on the torrent category and metacontent of a given account posting new torrents in a given time, and then comparing that with the historical data of the category and metacontent of posted "new-torrents" from trusted accounts.
This could potentially improve the accuracy of detecting spam flooding.

Because of the nature of overall new-torrent posting rates in a given category but across the sum of all accounts, it might be possible to extend this flood detection across multiple fake accounts used in a similar timespan, and maybe even anonymous posts over such a timespan.

Has anyone, at least, tried making their own hosted bot that can make a forum post listing suspected spam torrents? I assume there might be rules against that due to forum spamming rules (or in general).

It isn't. It's just a typical day in terms of spam. A few mods didn't show up (but it's not like they're paid or anything so) and you guys got a bit of a glimpse of what we protect you from every single day.

Profit.

(Apr 06, 2014, 20:09 pm)AnalogTV Wrote: Who could be behind this, an individual or an organisation?

Criminal gangs.

(Apr 06, 2014, 20:09 pm)AnalogTV Wrote: What can be done by The Pirate Bay to prevent this?

The same thing we do every day.

They rarely last longer than an hour or so. If they're caught within 30 minutes you never even see them. Usually there is someone around.

It depends what you mean by "a lot".

(Apr 06, 2014, 20:09 pm)AnalogTV Wrote: Is there some way that more people can help?

Not really. You can report them here, but we get most of them anyway. The ones that particularly benefit from reporting are ones over 24 hours old. If we haven't gotten them by then, we've probably missed them.

No. We don't want to hide the problem.

Its rare for them to contain viruses. Typically they contain directions for you to visit a website to intall a "necessary codec". That will contain the virus. Don't waste your bandwidth downloading fakes.

They don't. The torrents include trackers which report fake statistics.

No. They do upload some honeypots but not en masse in that way.

Not really going to share much info about that. Admins are fine though, thanks.

There are. We're generally anti-automation though. Most of the time mods can deal with the inflow, and they make less mistakes than bots.

It isn't specifically against the rules but if you flooded the forum with reports of the sort of patterns that we generally pick up anyway, that wouldn't help anyone and dealing with the redundant reports would waste mods time--you would soon be told to stop. And if you made too many "false positives" that would also be frowned upon.

Best not to go down that path.

I prefer the openness that TPB has. Sure. There are lots of fakes under 1 hour old. But almost all of them can be easily recognized. I think we are best to thank our mods, pay respect to the system, learn the signs, and not get too bent out of shape about them.

Even just an hour of TPB without moderation already so much crap on site so that's right we should thank them for their unpaid service. And yes these floods I think no need to report but we can comment for downloaders to be aware.

This isn't the place to report torrents--that would be the "Report Torrents" forum
