Live Music

I've attended a few concerts in my life, but none of them were amazing. They were for local bands that got a rise from the start but faded away over time. I bought one of their CDs and found the difference between digital and live astounding. They sounded awful live.

So now it comes around to you: Do you enjoy live music/concerts? Or do you prefer their music produced on CD better? While we're at it, might as well tell us if the concert you attended was good. Wink

What made it awful live? Do they suck as musicians? Was the venue just terrible? Did the guy driving the PA not know what he was doing? Did the band not know how to engage the audience?

Live entertainment is how I make my living, so I work with dozens of live shows every year. There are a lot of elements that go into creating the live experience, and when everything comes together, there is nothing that beats that experience.

My top two are Roger Waters doing Dark Side of the Moon, and Bruce Springsteen with the E Street Band. I love their music, and in the case of Bruce, he throws everything he's got into his show.

Some shows aren't about the music. A while back Dave Matthews was doing an acoustic tour with Tim Reynolds. It was something like 3 hours long and it was him talking as much as it was him playing. Some knob in the audience shouts "Play some music!" to which Dave responds "Play some music? Go home and listen to the fucking CD." So for most, it was a great show. For the dude who just wanted to hear some Dave Matthews tunes, it probably sucked.

I think it was the fact that they lacked a ton of energy. The album sounded good, but they sounded weak when compared to it. That was the biggest issue. I wouldn't say they sucked as a band, but for that time, they certainly left their energy at home.

Hi.
I think it depends on the type of music. I go to classical music-jazz concerts sometimes, and the experience has always been very good.
First aspect, the instruments are acoustic, so the sound is always perfect.
Second aspect, the place is usually a concert hall, which interior architecture is designed specifically to sound good.
Third aspect, the audience remain in silence.
Four aspect, the musicians are professionals.
The sound is much better than the recorded one, with more dynamics and rich sound, specially in chamber music (string quartets, for example).
I don't know if this gives you some information, music can be very different.
