Is the online piracy community dead?

Whille I will concede that the article is hardly sterling proof of corruption, and I do not belive that all, or even most of the Debian staff are anything other than what they claim to be, I would suggest that there are certain elements in the hierarchy that are a bit less than above board. Such as in the voting process involved with systemd.

I first sensed that something was awry with the heartbleed booger. Nothing I can put my finger on, but just something a bit offputting on how the app was added to httpd as well as the people that developed it. And it certainly goes far beyond Debian into the main internet organizations themselves.

The grey area is of course *funding*. Of course the vast majority of software has no hidden motives within, but there has been a subtle course change with corporations and the government taking such an interest in Linux. Tor is an example of the latter. Developed by the Navy, it does not need technical flaws to defeat it. Just raw computing power and server access.
Nothing a hacker or group would have, but certainly a government (or approved contractors).

Systemd is another such item. I do not see it as an exploit, but rather a misdirection into a form of centralizatiion which is the oposite of the FOSS efhos. Or at least, traditions.

There is also the possibility that I am being a bit too revanchist.
Time will tell.

While the govs and big corps control the network and power it's impossible to be 100% safe and free.

So a free radio net would make sense, IF people were willing to buy and keep solar panels and towers to benefit from sharing with others.
Also, standardizing on a light yet powerful, safe and easy distro would do miracles, IF someone would put time and money into making and marketing.

All big IF's.

It's impossible to be 100% safe and free in life.

Yes. Freedom is inversely proprotional to security.

And as control is the synonym for security it is usead as an excuse to limit our capabilities.

Like trying to force rigid corporate network security protocols on single user systems!

The real problem is that the hacker ethos, of taking complete control over ones desktop, to the point of reverse engineering its software is disappearing. And I'm not just talking Win either.
It would be nice to see a hack for enabling root access on Wayland, for example.

It's funny how people all go on about how Win10 is so bad for telemetry but yet nobody even mentions Win7 and how it had telemetry also.  Not as bad obviously but there was at least some there, enough to mention.  I guess it's all based around the fact that people actually woke up to things like telemetry around the time when Win10 hit back in 2015.  It was all a big shock but really when they was using Win7 they were already being watched it just wasn't as much as Win10 and in the same respect where they can physically remove software they don't agree with.  Not that is a problem for me though as I have already dealt with that issue some time ago now and can install anything I want without any kind of worry it's going to be removed.  I have to say all this kind of stuff did concern me some time ages ago but since I have placed measures into my whole computer experience with Win10 I don't have these problems now and have since moved on forward past these problems.  I see people still talking about these matters even in July 2021 but have to really say that I'm glad I sorted it all out because a Win10 without all this is really quite an enjoyable experience  Smile

Exactly, RodneyYouPlonker. I think that's why people are going to GNU/Linux in droves.

Me, I need to burn stuff on DVD so I can't.

But good point.

The actual telemetry seems to be a bit of a mystery, at least from info available online. Best guess is that it is some type of VPN/Tunnel that bypasses all typical site block methods.
You seem to have a better grip on it, but presumably under an NDA - so a bit hesitant to elucidate on the details.
So I will ask a simple question:
If you had a choice of your least favorite services/drivers, what would they be?

Here my methods are a bit crude: I simply use the recommendations from the BlackViper site, and take them a step further, by disabling everything I can, while keeping the system running. Including nearly everything related to M$ 'security'. RDP, Firewall, UAC, Defender - and use replacements where needed. I yanked a couple of protocols, as OpenVPN runs fine without them.

I've done this with my Win7 system, and Win10, though honestly I dont bother much with the Win10 laptop. The laptop Win10 is an older, never updated version, and appears to work normally. Used maybe twice a month.

The only advantage I can see in Win10 is a larger environment, which I get around in Win7 by simply putting truncated symlinked paths in the registry. (c:\ln\anab for c:\program files\anaconda\bin)

Is there anything I'm missing?

Perhaps if you cant specificy *what* to do to hack the bejeezis out of Win10, hopefully you may be aware of a site that breaches this info? Being in IT does have certain advantages!

@RX
There is a UDF driver now for Linux, but forgot the name!
The best burner software I have seen is K3B, but it still sux rocks compared to good old Win Imgburn.

If Apple had a brain cell they would realize that now was the time to strike into the desktop market with Win11 on the horizon. But I've been boycotting them since 1982, so its not an endorsement.

Linux still has a ways to go before its ready for prime time, and in fairness much of it is the fault of corps and proprietary drivers. If China can defang the 5eyes enough to allow Wine developers to fully reverse engineer Win drivers, then things might get interesting.

Well I can't say too much otherwise you are telling everybody what exactly you are doing to combat the whole situation.  I can tell you this though people are reading all these conversations and acting on it.  Only the other day had an update that tried to wipe out my telemetry system I have in place.  Thankfully spotted it very quickly and had it sorted out and put back to how it should be.  You're right though there's no 100% guarantee or anything like that but I've found that I used to have problems with Office ages ago and had issues where they would try and deactivated it but since long time ago and blocked this issue had no problems since.

The answer is simply it was software that was mentioned on this very forum some time ago and unfortunately the software I'm talking about is infact payware which is the reason it is no good for somebody like ill88eagle because you have to literally buy the thing which completely goes against his way of thinking as we know ill88eagle wants everything a freebie or not at all.

It's just that I've been hanging around on this forum for years now and have seen lots of posters come and go.  There's a huge and vast amount of information has been posted here for a long time so really what better place to access all this info and according to people who talk about things in more detail on videos you can find on youtube quite easily it's not as hard as you'd imagine but like I said I can't talk about it otherwise you are giving secrets away.

We are on a piracy forum. Everybody here likes free (gratis) shit. Your insult is moot (and reflects rather poorly on yourself). Me I am a bit more radical and prefer free as in *libre* shit. I know the concept is lost on you but whatever...

Well, I use my Windows box to burn DVD-Videos. Sorry for not making that clear.

I do make data DVDs too, but I can't live without my homemade DVD movies/TV shows/wrestling collection.

For that alone,  I swear by ConvertXtoDVD.

Always the case for every ill88eagle vs. RodneyYouPlonker showdown in Suprbay.

Come for the piracy, stay for the fuckery.
