Is it safe downloading torrents in College?
#1
Hello I am a new student in college. I download a couple of movies the first day I moved in my residents hall. I used the school's interent(where I had to enter my school online account). A classmate told me it was not safe to do so, so I deleted all my torrents. I read if the school finds out, I would have to pay a huge fine, and have my interent suspended for awhile. What are the chances of me getting caught right now, and the chances of downloading in the future?

If chances of getting caught are almost automatic...should I tell the school immediately that I downloaded and now deleted it?

nope... it's not really safe to download torrents at school.

but, first rule of anything... don't incriminate yourself and admit to nothing.

here is a thread that relates to what you are asking about:

So what should I do now? Wait for the warning/or fine letter?

no... do what other college kids do; drink and get high, occasionally go to your classes.

no point in waiting for something that might never come

If I do get caught...do you think I can talk my way out? Like say a deleted it quickly or not knowing the file was illegal?

admit to nothing.

i can't stress this enough. but, most importantly, don't stress yourself out over something that might not ever happen.

if you really want to find out what the school policy is on downloading content over the school's network... find out, without admitting to anything.

Do you know the chances of it happening?

So even when the school sends a letter stating they know, I still shouldn't admit I did it?

i want to say that the chances of it happening are very low... but i don't know what school you go to.

and yes... never admit to anything. ever.

this advice will serve you well in all aspects of life.

Here are my school policies.

So when they ask, should I say it wasn't me? Should I say it was someone else? Some person that I know or don't know? What should I say?
