I went to a local mall to buy a blank DVD to copy a Playstation 2 game on, and when I walked into a shop and asked for a Verbatim DVD, the guy told me that Verbatims are closed down.
Is this true?

It is nonsense Robert, I just checked the place where I would normally go online in my country and they are all stocked up selling DVD-R ready for whoever needs them for storage like say in the office or where ever they might need to burn data for backup purposes or anything important. I would show you the exact site but I don't like giving away links where I would normally purchase something.

Fair enough, RodneyYouPlonker, I wouldn't have need to go to such a place because I already have a place to go for my optical media needs.
I kind of knew the guy was bullshitting, but this time, it's falling out his mouth. He's lied to me before so he can turn a tidy profit, and the last time I actually bought something from him was four years ago. I guess there are places that you can't go for anything.
Thanks for the information, RodneyYouPlonker, now I will never go to him ever again.

I'm sure he is just lying to you. You have to be careful when you go into shops especially these days they will say all sorts of things and if it means getting a sale out of it then maybe so and just lie through their teeth. Some of these people are okay though but it's just that they can make stuff up and then try and sell you something else which they might have planned if they wanted to get rid of some stock that maybe nobody wants and the best way just make up a story and see how many people you can convince.

I believe the reference was to the fact that Verbatim is now outsourcing its production, and that the high quality dyes and materials it became famous for are no longer being used.
The Verbatim I have now in my drive is a CMC MAG-M01-00.
This batch appears to be pretty good. Pushed to 99% without edge failures.
From Walmart.

I would just like to say that in regards to products like Verbatim discs, which I am a fan of from past experience, I would no longer even attempt to purchase such things from a place like Amazon. Have done in the past but I have a different place to go instead. The place where I would prefer to shop are actually very cheap and you (mostly) pay the extra money on top for the postage fees. I think the choices of such products at Amazon went down hill and also the price for delivery especially in my own country just completely over charging. Last time I bought some discs for somebody else I went to the new place and got a lot better deal. Certain things now I would definitely not buy from Amazon at all. Not a diss to Amazon I think they are good but just really careful about what I buy from there now in 2020.

Then I guess I'll just stick to Ridata. They're very good when it comes to burning Playstation 2 games.

Probably made by the same people making the Verbatims.
The quality of DVDs seems to be improving. I used to typically get about 5% failure rate burning 4x at 98%. Now its about half that or less. All apparently CMCs (Verbatim, Philips, etc)

No, Ridata is a different company. They usually put out blank media of trustworthy quality, but I hear it's not for archiving.
I'll go to the local computer franchise shop and try some low-rent Verbatims.
Go screw that douchebag cunt for misleading me.

I see there are Riteks at:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-RITEK-RIDAT...SwRGhcTtbH
I just ordered a spindle. Will check them out. And look for RITEF IDs.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm\
Its nearly a decade old.
Back *then* the maker llist of 'Highest' quality was JVC, but it seems they are extremely pirated, or at least
outrsourcing as there are plenty of CMC YUDENs on Ebay.
As noted, my Verbatims are CMC, and just verified, so are my Philips.
Of interest is that a while back I copied to hard drive 100 CDs that were 20+ years old. Of miscellaneous cheap brands.
There was only one failure.
I am not sure anyone really knows how long optical media lasts......
