Holy smokes, this is great. Unfortunately, you've set the bar AND everyone's expectations pretty high. Thanks!

Cut the host segments into this version, as well as Adam West's Turkey Day bookends.

This is my very first comment on this forum. That is because I just registered tonight so I could comment and thank Riffling for this! (Though, really it is the combination of what Just A Guy added that made it perfect).
Are there any others? I have seen a version of Manos on YouTube that was similarly upgraded, but this was really excellent. It was also really great to see the death of the annoying smirking pasta throwing kid onscreen, instead of cut. That alone makes this experience so much more enjoyable than the original. I know a lot of people love the GaryInMotion Cinematic Editions, and I love the quality, but to me they remove what made MST3K the specific, odd thing it was. I need the silhouettes and host segments. I wish I had the video skills to add them back into those Cinematic Editions--that would be the ideal. In fact, this version of Zombie Nightmare is that ideal. Please tell me there are more MST3K Updates/Upgrades (that keep the actual show mostly intact. Poor host segment quality isn't such a big deal. ) Anyway---So good!

I always dreamed of doing something like this but thought the technology (not to mention my skills) did not exist to make this happen. Hopefully it is somewhat of a template so other episodes can be done up faster and with less work.
Nice Going!

Rewatched this the other night, had a blast and can't thank you enough. No pressure but if you decide to try another one, it will make my (and a lot of others') day!

I feel like this was the greatest thing to happen in MST3K land since first learning of the revival of season 11 and 12. In many ways this was even better since it revives the classic show. I hoped it would open the floodgates and more would follow. I always preferred MST3K to Rifftrax, which is why the "cinematic editions" have 0 appeal to me as they strip away the important elements of mst and turn them into rifftrax. But this, this was perfection--even with host segments in lesser quality--this is dream-come-true stuff.
But am I alone in this opinion? Is anyone else working on any upgrades of this sort--perhaps using those Cinematic Editions as a source, but putting the shadowrama and host parts back where they belong? Considering it has been 7 months since the original upload, are people just not as into this as I was and are happy with upgrades that remove the MST visual elements from the movies? (Asking because I am literally on here at least twice a day hoping for another Remastered episode, any episode.)

Riffling figured out the shadowrama restoration, but posted in January in the Cinematic Editions thread:
Riffling Wrote:I actually did this largely using the method you described although I'm back at the drawing board trying to improve it as the false-positive noise is bothering me. (I haven't had/made much time for this since though as life has been busy): So unless someone wants to take Riffling's experiments and run with them, we'll wait until Riffling makes more time for it. I prefer to encode episodes in x265 at fairly low bitrates, and others will have their own preferences, so I'd love a system where the components are made available, and then people can encode and assemble as they wish. Like Riffling could make the shadowrama PNG/PGS available to be burned in with people's encodes. The highest available quality host segments could be made available somewhere. There could be some standardized template or script which could maybe be fed into HandBrake or whatever to encode files and assemble them in the right order. But I'm spending too much time just encoding my RiffTrax library as I want it, so I'm not thinking much about MST3K for now.

Yeah, I didn't mean to go dark like this but I was unsuccessful with my improvement attempts and it took the wind out of my sails so to speak. Also, 50-60 hour work weeks are a fairly common thing for me, so beyond family, friends and other hobbies, my time is pretty limited.
That being said Anarchemist, your comment spurred me on and I started looking into an alternative so we'll see if that goes anywhere. I'd really like to improve on the method before doing any more and then my plan is to provide the scripts and details on how anyone can do it, as otherwise it will take forever for me to do them on my own. |
