How do you like your software?
#21
Of course, all software can be good, whether they come from Microsoft or a brilliant team of contributors; open source software and closed-source software is like comparing Kosher meat to Halal meat: they're prepared almost using the same rules.

But mostly, open source, or even GPL software, usually derives stuff that can rival stuff from the likes of Microsoft and Adobe.

Lately, software from the upper echelon have been disappointing.

First you convince me to try Linux, then entice me to gpl, next probably will try to bait me into a modular recycled laptop and speaking Morse.

Well, GNU/Linux and GPL are related, so naturally, I would do both because if I do one of the two you mentioned, I would do the other.

Most, if not all, GNU/Linux distros are licence to GPL.

Ahh, you're making as much sense as I am!

My Lenovo SFF PC (Intel 7th gen) has a UEFI boot and dunno why, it appears to resist booting from a USB flashdrive with Linux Mint.
Certainly MS/Intel made the thing in such a way to prevent other OS's from installing... But I mostly want the PC for games, which are mostly Windows apps.
So which gaming distro/tools should I try? Direct-X / OpenGL are needed, but what about MS libraries, like .Net framework, etc?

Steam has a distro for its own platform.

Can't you disable Secure Boot?

EDIT: Either that or TPM or both?

Good idea. I should try fiddling with BIOS. Gotta make a proper image backup first...

Well, don't dick around with settings without knowing what it does first; consult your motherboard manual first.

TPM and Secure Boot are security features, if you don't know, TPM is derived from a decade or two of standards; it stands for Trusted Platform Module and it "protects" systems from "keys." Secure Boot "defends" the computer in the boot up stage.

However, they can interfere with other operating systems' ability to boot.

So yeah, do backup your BIOS before you fuck it up.

Manual? It's an old 7th gen I bought at a second-hand store, probably fifth-hand... No manual, I don't even know what model it is.
Speccy says Lenovo 3102 (U3E1) motherboard, Intel Kaby-lake, B250 south bridge, i3 7100 @ 3.9 GHz, 2 cores, 128KB/512KB/3072KB cache.

What do you use or suggest for BIOS and disk backup?

I use a Gigabyte motherboard, but I put this one together in 2022, not second hand.

If you don't know the motherboard brand, then restart your system and, when it starts up, press the button that enters the BIOS/UEFI and pay attention to the board model if it prints it out.

We're getting off-topic, so if you need help, just PM me.
