Hints on storage management?
#1
Hi guys, I found Windows 7 disk management and Gizmo Drive (part of Gizmo Suite), but never used any.

I've a bunch of external drives and SD-cards; would like to configure them as a single one, or divide torrents by type (Games in one drive, Music in another one, all other stuff in yet another one). I couldn't find good options in library management, software RAID, or other easy way to deal with storage.

Is there any other way to make this work? Removable media can be dealt with some discipline and patience, but USB drives can disconnect suddenly uppon movement, and my desk is a bit cluttered.

Burning to Blu-Ray perhaps?

Before getting a 2TB external in 2010, I used blank DVDs to burn all my TV shows, but that was a very long time ago and I had to use a lot.

I'm just digging a hole for ideas; perhaps others may find better ones.

Why not get an NAS? no more worrying about usb. You can acces it with almost any device. And you'll ve able to watch shows/movies or w.e directly on your tv
**you can use the hdds you already have to put into the nas**

But dueda, do you want a solution for connecting the devices you already have or was my alternative/solution for your prob what u ment?

I dig that's not a bad idea, but I can't dig deeper in my pockets.
Also, last lightning seems to have broken my optical unit; it can work DVDs but crashes miserably with BDs.

As you guessed, for now, I just want to connect what I already have. But a software NAS/RAID in my next target.

When I get some more spare coin, I'll go to the nearby repair shop and get an used small PC.
NAS units here are just too expensive, they cost often more than an average PC and still need a PC to do the torrenting.

I understand it's cheaper to buy a PC then make it run a client (wired to the router/modem) and serve media across WiFi/DLNA.
For that I just need good free software, thus having two for the price of one Wink

That's a really good option. It's something I used to do (mainly for TV Shows and Anime).
I have had really good experiences with an external blu-ray reader & writer. All it would need is a USB port.

It also depends on the amount of files you have. I thought about NAS but it would not work money wise for me. The current hole I am digging consists of 8 4TB external drives hooked through a couple of USB 3 hubs. I do not need them on all the time as I just save up files in their categories and move them to the appropriate drive at a convenient time.

And I am thinking of getting 2 more drives.

Maybe not the best option, but in addition to my last recommendation, why don't you consider Dual Layer DVDs?

I have few files, around 1 TB. Adding 4TB is a convenience to get rid of the clutter, for now a NAS is overkill.
My 500GB drive will remain as backup reserve, 1TB drive will be in a caddy soon, and the 4TB fits well on my desk, even being a 3.5" with external power.

What I'm thinking about is to buy an Android box to run Kodi, media server / DLNA, and a torrent client. Or an used PC.
Guess it would be easy to connect the 4TB drive, just the file system should be exFAT32 or Ext4. I better convert it now, before transferring files.

I didn't think about DVDs, thats a nice idea! I can get media here for as low as $0.30, a hundred blanks for $30. That can work, thanks!

Only problem is, that won't be a shareable solution, unless I rotate files in my drive, and that Seagate costs 0.17 per movie, near half the DVD.
* For 4GB per movie vs. a 4000GB drive. So I'm still considering an on-line storage solution...

Rather than $30 on DVDs, spend a little more and get a 2TB internal drive for $42:

If you want it as standalone box, you could look on something like Craigslist (Just beware of the nightmares!) or Freecycle for a freebie for the time being

Thanks SpunkyMcMunkey, but that is not an option here where I live.
A 2TB drive goes for around $100. And that's lotta money here, enough to get fed for a month, easy.
But as I just got a 4TB drive, my problem is to manage the storage.
Would swap my bike for a NAS, but around here the only guys in possession of one are either rich who don't need it, or fences for break & entry goods.
