Hints on external 4-6-8 TB USB drives?
#1
I've had a 60GB Kingston SSD in my notebook, and a 1TB WD Blue in a cheap USB enclosure, for 5 years without any problem. Just want to upgrade.

I sold a mobile for USD $225 but here south things are expensive; tropical beaches, crazy hot babes, but 1/3 currency value is a downside Tongue

Seagate 4 TB Expansion series are popular for around $140 and Sandisk 240 GB SSD for $90. Buying both for $230 seems reasonable.
Or I can go for a 6 TB and see how long Kingston reputation will last; if necessary I can put the WD Blue back inside, no big deal.

As far as Seagate drives go, I've seen nothing wrong but some noise. WD 5400 RPM is very quiet.
Anyone used those parts, or has any suggestions?

Hey, mate, some years ago I bought 3 Seagate's (3 TB) and a few month's later I added 3 Western Digital's (3 TB).

2 of the Seagate's are now fucked up and doesn't work anymore. Even when I took them out of the USB casing a put'em internal they wouldn't work. The last one is on it's last leg, making strange noises, bit still sort of working. Big Grin I'm gonna buy a new Western Digital (4 TB) in the start of the next month and transfer all the files over to that one.

The 3 WD's (with on and off button) works flawlessly and always has. I'm never going back to Seagate's External USB drives (no on and off buttons included btw). For me an on and off button has become essential to have on a external USB drive, it just works som much better than shutting of through Disk Management or via the tray.

You're not promoting Seagate's quality confidence; sorry to hear that so many files went to torrent heaven...
Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. It's not that I'm on a bashing of Seagate drives mission, it's just that it's the truth of what happened. Smile

I have two other Seagate drives, but they are internal drives and has always been working flawless. So it's only the external Seagate drives I have an issue with.
But with that said I'll probably still stay away from Seagate drives internal or external. Big Grin

Found some WD Passport for a 15% more, looks good - But the case design and colors are a little "excentric".

Me personally, I would upgrade the internal 1TB hard drive. Get a USB 3.0 SATA dongle, use it to clone your 1TB drive to the new larger drive, then swap the hard drives. Now you have a larger (faster than USB) internal HDD, a bonus 1TB external HDD, and a useful USB HDD tool.

That would be my first choice too, but no 4TB drive will fit my notebook. Not even in a caddy adapter.
Either I wait a couple years, or get an external unit.

Transfer idea is good. Just all my data is in external units, so I don't really need a dongle to transfer.
What I want is to get rid of a couple small drives and keep only one big on my desktop.

Oh that's right, they're thicker, aren't they?

I really like the WD Elements External drives. I have 2 of them. The other external WD I have is a 'Passport'. The first WD external drive I bought.

How much does this drive cost in your neck of the world, mate? In my end it's about 120-130 dollars for the drive:

It's the drive I'm gonna invest in in the start of next month.

Hard to find around here. Only one advert on a popular site, kinda pirate e-Bay, which has lots of contraband and counterfeit:
Seller from USA (?) says import taxes are included in his $165 price, but he's a newcomer (no previous sales/ratings).

Dicey, to say the least. Lots of parcels are "lost" by freight, postal, and aduana employees; illegal overtax / fines are common; no guarantee or support from WD.

For comparison, reputed sellers offering NAS or portable models:

$620 Wdbvbz0040jch 4tb Nas My Cloud Ex2 (thick "hardcover book" design).
$680 Wdbmut0040jwt 4tb Nas My Cloud Duo (boxy design).
$180 (part# ?) 4tb Passport portable (flat boxy design with color options).

I'm still thinking about it. If I go for the WD it means a 120GB SSD, not 240.
