Favourite GNU/Linux OS
#1
Hi, do you have a favourite GNU/Linux OS you're currently using?

Although I am learning about hacking Windows 7, I'm still immersed into GNU/Linux OSs and technologies.

The one that suits my taste buds is Linux Mint. It's a fork of that other famous GNU/Linux OS Ubuntu, which is also a fork (of Debian), but the difference is that Linux Mint, at least the MATE version, is quicker on old computers (and ones with Windows 7/XP), it comes with a lot of useful software out of the box as well as codecs, in general stuff that other organisations are afraid to do.

The URL is www.linuxmint.com. The organisation maintains five versions: MATE, Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE, and their own remake of Debian GNU/Linux. While they are using Ubuntu's source code as a template, the OS is, in my opinion, better than Ubuntu.

What's your favourite GNU/Linux system?

Mint has improved a lot in all these years. After Ubuntu, Mint has maximum no. of users. I think it is a good linux OS. Bu i also like openSUSE, Elementary OS. All have their own pros and cons. So stick with whatever you like. I'm also currently using Mint but with cinnamon desktop.

Fedora for desktop usage - great support of software/hardware, drivers, codecs, etc. and also with awesome repos of goodies. Awesome security and has the RedHat devs contributing to the development of the distro.
Debian for top rate security. Great repos and rock solid stability. Great long term support of each version.
TAILS for a mobile/portable secure OS for web access.
Whonix for those times when I get my 'Pinky and the Brain' schemes or when i just want to be a 'ghost' and do my dirt. lol

IMO, Ubuntu is commercial garbage with Canonical company pushing ads and selling usage information. Distro is full of privacy holes created by Canonical to turn a profit.
Havent used Mint in a few years, so cant give a solid opinion on that distro, other than I hear no complaints.

Thanks for mentioning Debian; I've been a Mint user, but I never knew Debian.

Perhaps one day, I will try it.

Based on the specifications I outlined above, can my computer use Debian without choking on it?

If you're learning about hacking, try Kali Linux (formerly known as BackTrack), based on Debian..
Or Fedora Spin Security Lab. CMIIW

No problem.
Debian running smoothly on dual-core. IMO.

My favourites GNU/Linux:
Debian (and derivative system) and Fedora, maybe Big Grin

What do you know... I'm an idiot!

I haven't outlined my system specs.

I'll do it now:
- Pentium 4 2.8GHz
- 2GB RAM
- 30GB HD Space partitioned with ext4

Sorry, I don't know what my head is at! Smile

wow - if it was up to me, Id say scrub that and put Windows XP on it, POS crack it then harden it.....or throw Puppy Linux or some other low resource xfce distro on it. Tongue
Is that your actual every day use computer?

Well, I'm already using Linux Mint and it served me well.

My asking about Debian was out of my curiosity.

Carjacker, yes, that is my "actual every day use computer," but it serves me well; I can copy stuff, I can use it to download, and, if I may say so, it doesn't seem all that obsolete to me.

But, say what you want.

By the way, a site that keeps track of upcoming and favoured GNU/Linux distributions is DistroWatch.

Go here: http://distrowatch.com/

The first GNU/Linux versions I tried were not desktop OSs like Ubuntu or Mint; it's Knoppix, a Live-CD-only distribution. Supposedly, it's another fork off of Debian. Go here to try: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Hope this helps and hope there are more posts! Keep them coming!

Code:
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2809

System requirements:
x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).
512MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution (1024×768 recommended).
    DVD drive or USB port

This is the "official" take from the system requirements page of LMDE, Linux Mint Debian Edition. The requirements look pretty tame. Will try it, and you bastards better do it too! Smile

Thanks for participating, but I can use more suggestions, as might anyone who is staying here.
