Downloading torrents and despite VPN being turned on, I got two notices from windstream...

IS it even POSSIBLE to download torrents WITHOUT getting caught?
I just chatted to a support guy at teh vpn company and he said no and gave me all bunch of run arounds to why it wasn't possible.
Well, I'm a dumbass and don't know much but I've been paying for this service for over a year for that particular reason. I have a very long story about dish, cable, downloading and so on but won't go into it so my question is simple. WITH the correct settings, setup, is there a way to GUARANTEE that when I download a torrent, I CANNOT BE seen?
Second, if it is, would someone be kind of enough to talk me through the settings over the phone 'cause I suck at written instructions and no< i'm not trying to scam someone. I gave up my dish because I was having too many probolems (again a long story) with them and after that, I ran totally out of money. I make 750 a month and I make so little money I even had a buddy set up a gofundme thing for me which has collecdted some 40 bucks Smile
I also have insomnia so this is all I do, I play on the puter and watch movies and tv shows and now, I can't even do that. I routinely go 30-40 hours without sleep (my record is 50 hours) so can you imagine how bored I get.
Any help please and above all, is this even DOABLE and if not, what's the purpose of the VPN? AM I not understanding this correctly.
Thanks
George

It could be possible that you are leaking the sites that you visit to some kind of DNS server and they can see what you're doing.  Not only is it about having your VPN turned on, but also you need to make sure there's no leakage coming from your PC or laptop.  Possible that you are doing this through Anti-Virus software or maybe something else. Try and find out what you are leaking through and if possible remove or uninstall those features or components from your Anti-virus to make sure you aren't being watched by anyone at all.

Also it is possible that the VPN you are using is based in a place where lots of Laws and things are in effect.  Simply put if you do something like download something and in that country they won't allow that as the Law says you should then make sure you change things and get a VPN where it is based in a country where people are less bothered.  As I've said many times completely avoid a place like the USA or the UK and make sure your VPN is not based in those places.  Make sure it's somewhere else where the Law is different.  Yes your ISP will know you're using a VPN as you cannot hide that but you can't be viewed by your ISP because they don't see what goes on with your connection.  If they can't see what you're doing it means you're connected to the Dark Web.  I'm not saying to do anything totally illegal but if you're just downloading a movie here or there then if the country where your VPN is based have a relaxed view on the subject then don't panic as you should be safe.

Really the best kind of VPN is where you are encrypted with your connection and also you should follow the website of the company and find out if they will allow file sharing (it should say somewhere).  Very important really which country they are based in.  If your VPN are approached by anybody then it really falls down to the Laws and such of that place.

Just make sure do some DNS leak tests on your VPN and see what else your computer is leaking information to.  Make sure that at least something like Anti-virus is not telling just anybody what sites you visit and what kind of connections you make to peer 2 peer services and at what IP addresses you are exposing yourself to.  Try and find a guide and read up more about your VPN read reviews as other people will rate your VPN and you'll be able to find out more if you read it all first.

BTW, just further into this thread.  You have posted this in the wrong section it should be in the section above this one.  This is General Discussion.  You should be in the Censorship Busting section.  You could ask for it to be moved there otherwise it might even be moved there anyway by a mod.

First, thanks a lot for the detailed reply.

Second, this is all Greek to me and not only do I have no idea what you are talking about, there's also no way I can do what you are telling me as I'm clueless. My problem is I need someone that KNOWS 100% or close to it what they are doing that can talk me through it over the phone or log into my puter remotely and I know that's a big ask.

I was on Private INterent Access and bittorrent when I got caught. For years, I had no VPN and never got caught so why now.

The ISP guy who was very cool told me they've ramped up (the movie companies) because of the covid and everyone sitting at home downloading shit but that doesn't help me and what I can do.

I then spoke to Nord VPN and the support girl said that there was NO way I could get caught if using their services and set up correctly.

I also for a server close to where I am (Charlotte, NC) and they had one but according to you, I should go the other way to some completely different country instead.

What the hell do I do?

Thanks

Not the server, that matters, but I believe he's talking about not getting a VPN that has it's HQ based in the same country as you, since the government can get the records more easily.

I use Express VPN which is not a US-based company. I am from Connecticut, but I manly choose a default server that's either in NY or NJ (one state away)

I purchased it since, Like Rodneys says, it's comprehensive and doesn't have any leaks. Was it a free VPN that you have?

Yes, I understood the part about a server in a different country and most have servers in other countries. My problem is all the different parameters and options add to what to ME is an insurmountable obstacle for many reason. I don't know as much, I don't have the patience to learn it all 'cause I think I have some very serious ADD or something but I have the patience of a fruit fly. I have a very severe reading comprehension problem and much more which makes this very hard for me.

On top of that, every post in a forum leads to more questions and more options and what started as perhaps a simple questions, is now something with 20 different things to check and still, no guarantee that it'll work.
Meanwhile, I can't really afford to just keep trying stuff and getting emails from my ISP 'cause it some point, at the minimum they will turn my internet off and at the most, they'll take legal action.

I've done this for years and about a year or so ago, I got a VPN and interestingly enough, NOW is when I get in trouble.

I am with Private Internet Access by the way.

I also talked extensively on a chat with a tech from VPNord or something and of course, she ASSURED me that this could not happen with their service.

However, when I asked if they had a server near charlotte, she didn't mention antyhing about it being a good idea to go to a foreign server. So, as you can see, whatever I do, I just wind up with MORE questions and more doubts.

I used to pay for everything and I really DO believe that everyone is entitled to get paid for their work. I had netflix, block buster, wal mart account, dish and so on but let them all go for different reasons. THe final one was Dish and it was only because I was
having a bunch of issues that they couldn't fix. I had so many problems that they escalated me to a guy that would up giving me free dish for a whole year so you know it was something serious. Didn't get my issues fixed but at lest, it was free.

I finally gave up on them three years ago and have been downlading since and never been happier. No commercials to skip through. The sound for ME which was an issue is fixed and much more.,

I also have a sever insomnia so this is all I do but now, I don't even have this Sad

If your VPN is not protecting you simply stop paying them / switch to another. I used this one for years and never had issues: https://www.citizenvpn.com/main/index.ph...ommon/home (not US based)

Back then there was only one way of paying: manually every month through paypal. It was around 10$. I'm considering getting the 5 euro monthly subscruption. It's a good deal...

Sometimes it's the simple things that catch you.

Make sure you start your VPN before you start your torrent client. If you start the client first, it will set up a TCP/IP connection and it won't change over to the VPN connection.

Make sure you have a kill switch on your VPN client activated to close your torrent client, if your connection burbs and then reconnects it won't be thru the VPN and if your client reconnects then you are wide open again.

Don't mean to be aidzy, but here is a info site from the VPN I chose
https://www.expressvpn.com/what-is-vpn

It explains a great deal of what a VPN does and offers tests to see if you are protected or not. It also goes through things like TOR.

I don;t own anything, so I don;t think i'm spamming as much as info sharing. NORD VPN looks good too, but for me, the connection was way too slow.
